BTDT-Selecting a Pediatrician

For the BTDT Mom's or the ladies who have already done this that are still pregnant, what type of things to do you look for in a Pediatrician and what questions do you ask. DH and I have our first meet & greet next week with a CNPN and a Ped that was recommended to us, but I don't know what to ask.

Thanks in advance

When i selected DS's I started by reviewing my insurance company's provider directory. I saw that at the (then) local ped practice the DR my mom used with my youngest brother (he was 8 years younger than me) was still practicing. She had just started out back then. My mom had always loved her a Dr, so I checked and she was taking new patients and was now the head of pediatrics at a local hospital. (Double bonus). We met with her and had a tour of the local peds office before DS was born, and everything clicked so we went with her.

The only downside is now that we've moved it's a 25 minute drive to their office. And with her being the head of pediatrics she only has office hours 2.5 days a week.

Referrals are a great way to go. Check w/ other mommy friends, co-workers (have DH ask around as well), members at church, etc.

I found Selin's pedi from a referral. I used to volunteer in the peds unit of my local hospital (same place I'm trying to get a job at!) so I asked my old volunteer supervisor in the unit for recommendations. I did a meet and greet with the first one and loved them so much that I cancelled my appts to interview the others! (I was planning to interview three.) I love them and it is great that they are in the hospital, have covered parking and are only 5 minutes away. For the questions, I believe I got them off the American Academy of Pediatrics website. I don't recall the website offhand but I'm sure if you do a search you'll find it online.

I would make sure you choose a pedi that is in line with your beliefs as far as BFing, vaccinations, etc. It also helps if they have night/weekend appts. I also like having our pedi so close by as our appt coming up this weekend will be our 4th in 4 months. Selin went when she was 4 days, 2 weeks, 2 months and now 4 months.

I second checking who your insurance will cover. At 500 a pop or so for a baby check up you want as much of that covered by insurance as possible. I looked at our list and a large part of them were part of a practice. This was something that I wanted, though I didn't want a huge place I wanted a place that had multiple Dr's that way if our Ped couldn't get us in we had another option within the practice.

I didn't actually get to interview our Ped as I was prego during the H1N1 epidemic and they didn't want us prego ladies in with all the sick kids. I talked to a few people I knew that were using that practice that had been happy with it. I also got a good rec from me OB.

Something to consider is the size. Like I said our Ped's office has 5 Ped's and two NP. They are very good with getting you in with someone even if its not your Ped.

Another thing I like about our office is they have a 24 hour nurses line. So if at any time Simon is sick or we had questions we could call that line. They have either always answered or called us back within 30 minutes or so. The nursing staff is great. This I think is very very important as honestly, you see the nurses more then you see the Ped.

Our Ped office is also located on the hospital campus which is nice if we need blood drawn or if every needed to transport him quickly to the hospital we would already be there.

Good luck with your choice!
