Cloth diapering - logistics

I'm planning to cloth diaper and after starting to get my mind wrapped around all of the different types of diapers (a feat in itself), I'm now wondering about the logistics of how it all works. These might seem silly to you BTDTs, but I'm clueless!

How many diapers do I need to start? What sizes?
Do I need one of those sprayers on the toilet?
How often do you do laundry?
Where do you store dirty diapers before laundry? Do you rinse or treat them before you throw them in the laundry bin?
Do you cloth diaper when you're out of the house? If so, how does that work (in other words, what do you do with the dirties)?

And please add any other tips and tricks you've learned along the way! Thanks!

Thanks for the explanation, girls! I've never heard of or seen such a thing - maybe it's something specifically American?

My reusable nappies also seem to work differently - you have a thin sheet that you put over the cloth inlay at the bottom area. So the poop is on that and you can just chuck it in the loo (the sheet dissolves like toilet paper).

Anna--you can get those things here, but not everyone buys them.
