Coughing - Help!

Evan has had a cold since Saturday, and we have had three horrible nights in a row - first because he was congested and couldn't breathe, and now because he has this awful cough.

I was reading my Dr. Sears book that says you can give babies cough medication. But, then I went on his website and he says they are no longer approved for kids under the age of 4.

So, I need your help, ladies! Is there anything you have done to help your child with their cough at night? We all need a better sleep tonight - I don't think I can handle another brutal night!

We give homeopathic cough syrup, totally safe for little ones. Do you have something like that in Canada?

Sounds like a classic cold to me! Fede has had several so far. One thing that is completely harmless is to do nebulizations (no meds, just the steryle solution). I you don't have the nebulizator, youi can try locking you, Evan and some toys in the bathroom and opening the shower with hot water. The steam will softer the cough a lot.

HOWEVER. Be careful, this kind of silly coughs can turn into something more serious, very quickly. Watch out for shortness of breath, gurgling or rasping breathing sounds and fever. Any of those symptoms deserves a visit to the Dr. asap.

Thanks ladies! Ash - I'm sure we do. I'll have to look into it and find out where I can get something like that.

Mari - we did end up buying a warm water vaporizer (I assume that's the same thing you're talking about). Hopefully it helps.

I did end up taking Evan to the doctor after I picked him up from daycare and the staff said his cough was getting worse. Turns out he has croup :P Good times!

Poor baby! Fletcher had croup when he was a little over a year. It's no fun but fairly harmless. I'm glad you got Evan checked out.

Mari - the doctor didn't give us anything, because it's a relatively mild case (no breathing problems, nothing in the chest/lungs, etc). He told us to use a warm water vaporizer and/or steam up the bathroom with a hot shower, and to give him lots of hugs and snuggles :)

Erica - I think it seems a lot worse than it actually is! The cough is unbearable to listen to, but it's getting better already.

Maxim had a cold a month ago and his cough dissipated until once at night, usually very late. I chalked it up to leftover mucous (sometimes it can take 2-3 weeks for a cough to go away) and/or extra saliva from teething. Anyway, it started coming back really strong this weekend and I personally think its the air quality at camp (the furniture, mattresses and carpets are OLD),. Anyway, I called his doc on monday to get in and his appt is Thursday. But last night I was more worried it could be croup....so I called Telehealth and she was super helpful. She even listened to his cough and said "nope no way that is croup." So maybe next time give Telehealth a call for peace of mind....they can be real bitches sometimes, depending on the nurse and type of day they are having but I got a nice one last night. Hope he feels better soon!!!

Alyssa,

So sorry to hear Evan has croup! Poor baby! While Selin has never had croup, we have dealt with colds/coughs and these are the things we do to keep her comfy:

-Put a rolled up towel under one end of her mattress so her head is elevated. She sleeps MUCH better this way when she's sick.

-Put a little bit of Vicks Vapor Rub on her chest and bottom of her feet.

-Run the vaporizer in her room at night.

-Put saline spray in her nose throughout the day, esp. before bedtime.

Other than that, all you can do is just lots of cuddles! :-)

I had one of the same suggestions as Christine---Vapor Rub on his feet---it sounds silly, but it's really helped when my Evan has had a cough!

Ruby - glad telehealth was helpful for you! I know they can definitely be hit or miss.

Christine - thanks for the suggestions! We did elevate his head and used a vaporizer and nasal spray.

Sara - I've never heard of Vapor Rub on the feet, but we'll try that next time!

Evan is feeling much better now - YAY! He's definitely more energetic and happy again, which is nice. Of course, now I'm sick :P Maybe I'll put Vapor Rub on my feet!
