Finding a babysitter?

Hey ladies! So, we don't have any family that live nearby, so we have never gone out just the two of us since Evan was born (save one time when DH's parents were in town). We'd really like to change that, but need to find a babysitter we feel comfortable with.

I have asked at the daycare whether they have a list of trusted babysitters - they don't, but they said a) some of the staff there do babysit on the side, and b) some other parents probably have recommendations. So, they were going to look into it and get back to us.

If that doesn't pan out though, what other ways have people found reliable/trustworthy babysitters? TIA!

We have used care.com. It is $30 a month but they do background checks and you can cancel at anytime. However i have had most success with craigs list. Got my current day sitter and our night sitter there. anyway hope that helps.

Alyssa,

Do you belong to any type of moms group? I found my neighborhood group through meetup.com and found our regular sitter (daytime not nightime) through a referral from the moms.

I also found our temporary sitter through CL an got lots of responses there when we were in our sitter jam. Like anything else on the Internet, use your best judgement. I've also heard good things about sittercity.com and like care.com, they can do background checks.

GL and I hope date nights become a regular thing for you soon! ;-)

If you belong to a church, they often have a youth group of HS students that you could meet with and see if any match what you want. Our church has a message board where people have put up ads looking for a sitter. Also, check with your local high school. Many have career centers that wuth counselors that could point you in the right direction of some good sitters. I don't know you're feeling on teenagers; I have some great teenage babysitters that we use for William, but if you're not ok with that use the others website suggestions.

The financial aid office at a nearby women's college posts requests for childcare as a service to students and the community, and that's actually where I got my permanent sitters.

I've found most of mine through other parents or in the neighborhood, I like using teens that live near us.

Here is some good advice on how to prepare for your sitter: http://www.ivillage.com/how-prepare-your-sitter-get-peace-mind/6-a-127564?p=1

These are all great suggestions, thanks ladies! I've done some searching around on the web, and there are a few websites for the local area. So, we'll probably look into that first, and go from there.

Thanks again!

I put a job posting on our local university's job website (they have a section for private jobs). I had gotten babysitting jobs that way in the past and think it is a great way to go about it.

We got about 20 emails and then I had about 6 come to our house for an interview and we picked 2. We ended up only really using 1 because the other almost never has time but we are so happy with the one we have, and feel 100% safe leaving Teddy with her. When we need a new one I will do the same thing again:)

For us having someone a bit younger was also important since we like to stay out a bit later and normally college students are less likely to mind babysitting till 1 or 2 in the morning :D

The problem we have is that we wanted to find a teenage babysitter and they have a safe sitter program at church. The problem is that you have to find them, they won't give a list out due to privacy and I guess they've had issues in the past. I asked people all over church and never got anything. So we just interviewed a senior at the high school here and I got her off craig's list. We need to go out on a weekday night and our daytime sitter will only sit until 530 and I don't want to ask our night sitter as she has kids of her own and she lives 30 minutes away, plus we'll only be gone for about 2 hours which isn't worth it.

The only places that I can find sitters are care.com, craigs list and there was a local website that was the Moms Like Me brand but they shut down this past week so now I can't even post on there. I guess someone is going to start up a local website eventually but we'll see. Other than that there aren't any other websites around here you can find sitters or any message boards ect.

So, great news! Two of the staff at daycare have said they would be happy to babysit Evan!! YAY!! We are SO happy about this, because we already know and trust them, and Evan is extremely comfortable with them already (they both work in his room at the daycare). I can't even express how excited I am to be able to go on a DATE with DH!!! LOL!
