My first AF arrived 4.5 months after I had my son even though at the time I was exclusively breastfeeding. I was one of the unfortunate ones who got AF while BF'ing.
I know you don't want to hear this but mine have been horrible. Bad cramping, headaches and the first few had a lot of bleeding. I went on the mini pill at 6 weeks PP and not sure if that had to do with it. I am now on the regular BC now that I stopped BF and they aren't so heavy but that could be the pill that is helping too. Plus the first few they lasted almost a week of bleeding which was a bit much for me and the first few days of each AF for the first few months were so heavy. Hopefully you won't have these problems though.
Mine arrived at 7 months post birth with Desmond and 8 months post birth with Eloise, I was still nursing when it arrived, but I was happy since my Mom's apparently arrived 3 months post birth with all 4 of us and she was nursing as well.
Mine were a bit lighter then before I got pregnant. I don't know if it is because I am not on the pill or what though, since I was on the pill till basically the month before I had Desmond and had been on it for years before that. That being said it isn't that much different then it was before, just a bit lighter, it was still ridiculously long (7 to 8 days) and I still had a bunch of really heavy days, and few light days. It was a bit lighter and I did have a few 5 day periods though after it came back which were nice.
Maxim was just over 3 months. I knew it was going to happen relatively soon, he basically night weaned himself at 2.5 months and was sleeping 10 hours at night without a feed.
The actual PMS wasnt that bad though I was a bit crabby. Normally I have brutal cramps and loose stools every once in awhile (its unpredictable) with the first AF but didnt have any of that. What was really bad was the amount of blood...I felt like I was 10 years old again and a newbie. I soaked through my normal absorbency tampon and had to move up to a heavier absorbency and still could have gotten the max absorbency. I would soak a tampon AND a lightweight pad (worn to protect my underwear) in an hour. I started wearing both just to protect my clothes. It was awful and the heaviest bleeding was 4 days, which is not normal for me either. Havent had my second AF yet, expecting it any day now but I hope the bleeding isnt as bad.
1. How old was baby when AF returned? Teddy was 8 months old. He was still breastfeeding but he had cut down a few feeds due to becoming more mobile.
2. Have your periods changed from what they were like before pregnancy? After my first period PP (which was normal) I went on the mini pill, which made my cycles irregular and the "periods" probably lighter. Since stopping BC in July I have had two true periods (not withdrawal bleeds like on BCP) and they were both normal like before, not any heavier or more painful or anything. The length was the same as before as well (5 days).
1. Barrett was almost one year old. I think AF showed up the week before his b-day.
2. The first AF was super light and barely lasted three days. My second AF was the heaviest and longest I have ever had in my life. Then my third AF was back to normal for me. And the length of my cycles was also back to normal by the third cycle. I didn't have bad cramps with any of them which was a nice change.
I had light cramping off and on for a couple months before AF actually returned so her return may not be that imminent.
1. How old was baby when AF returned? Evan was around 7 months old-I BFed exclusively until we started solids at 6 months, though he really wasn't that into them and still nursed frequently during the day and at night.
2. Have your periods changed from what they were like before pregnancy? My first 2 were shorter cycles and very short and light. The third was uncomfortable (the cramps were a little worse than I remembered them), and took a little longer (5 days instead of my usual 4). It took a few months for my cycles to go back to their usual number of days (I even had a super long one that made me think I was PG), and I took Vitex to help myself regulate as well.
Hi! I got my first period 10 weeks post-partum and it was okay. Breastfeeding did not work for us but I did pump that first month. It lasted for around four days with little cramping which was nice. A week later I experience some break-through spotting which is normal and that lasted for three days and I have not had any since. I expect to get my second period in the next couple weeks. It was not as bad as I thought I guess since going through the healing of her birth and bleeding for over 2 1/2 weeks right after her birth my period was actually not that bad. The three to four day period was normal like I've always had before pregnancy. Hope yours is okay and your son is the cutest!!
Great thread...I've been wondering when AF might come back to visit me as well. Lucy is 5 months, and no signs yet. We've started some solids, and she occasionally sleeps through the night, so it may not be too far off.
