Following the skin color/cultural diversity topic... I have found at least two tv shows that seem really good about it. One is Milly & Molly at discovery kids, it's set in New Zealand, about two little girls, one is of maori background and the other european, the stories are quite lovely. The other one is Handy Manny at Disney, I like that there are characters from about every nationality and also some of the characters are handicapped.

Mari, I completly know the feeling! When I make a "green mile trip" it is so hard! It breaks my heart when I have to put animals down that didn't do anything wrong but end up with dead beat owners! I picked up a mother dog with 8 puppies today. I literally doubled my animal population in my shelter today. Luckily I have two going to new homes tomorrow!

(sigh)... sometimes I just want to go there and bring her home, but then I know I will see all the other dogs and cats that need homes and I will have some sort of emotional meltdown.... DH told me that it is enough, and that I can't be the savior of all stray animals... I guess he is right, but it isn't a nice situation...

Mari--I live a half mile from our shelter/humane society. I used to take Peter about once a week to look, but it's too much for me. I want them all. There's a cat right now that looks like my missing Alice, and I want her desperately. Sean says two (and a stray I feed and named!) is plenty. Oddly, it's not the puppies and kittens I want; it's the "grown-ups."

Ok, off to look at the adoption site again...

Mari - DH doesn't let me go to the shelters, he knows I will come home with like 10 dogs. I grew up with dogs, my dad was a breeder of Spring Spaniels, so I never had a time when I didn't have dogs - at least until I went to college. If Mac could handle more than just her here I would totally get another dog.

Christine and Jess--I hope you're both feeling better today.

Ash and Andi--I think your kids are blessed to have parents that want to encourage them to be happy in their skin regardless of what color it is. So many don't do that.

Mari--ITA about Disney! I have a prof. who won't let his twin girls watch it because of the messages it sends.

Cassie--Any advice on dealing with an untrained shelter dog? I have scratches on my stomach, back, and arms from all the jumping.

AFM--Peter learned to hiss like a snake last night, which might just be the funniest thing ever. He spits all over when he does it. :) He also roars like a lion, and has a softer roar for each of the cats. Apparently they're small lions. And since one cat is softer than the other, her's is the softest sound. I'm impressed he put it together that way. He doesn't have a lot of words, but we're up to lions, ducks, dogs, cows, cats, chickens, snakes, and monkeys for animal sounds.

Otherwise, we're just trucking along. I'm trying to train the dog since it appears she doesn't even know her name, let alone any commands. It's great fun trying to walk her (she isn't leash trained) and wrangle Peter at the same time. Oy.

Andi, katie and Ash- Your kids are so adorable!!!

All your comments about skin colors made me remember... Although I have white skin, when I was a little girl, I was so upset about my dark hair!!! Almost every princess in every story book/movie/cartoon had blond, long hair... and mine was dark brown and short!!! I even used to draw myself as a blonde!! I think it took me until I was about 8yo to finally accept it!

Some years later Disney came up with Beauty and then Pocahontas, and I was soooooo happy to see a "different" princess! (And BTW, the girl in the Princess Frog is about as beautiful as can be!!) it's nice they finally "realized" that white is not the only race inthe world!
