Thanks Kate! I've been doing a little more reading online, and some women report weight gain -- did you experience that?

Also -- I'd probably only have it in for 1-2 years before we TTC again...

Ella what about just the copper IUD rather then Mirena, I believe Mirena has hormones, so if I was going to go for one I would go for just the copper since there are no hormones.

Thank you for the sig Mary

Since Mirena has hormones, I wonder why your midwife suggested it... AS Sarah said, the copper one sosunds better.

And what about other methods? Maybe FAM could work since it's only for 2 years.

The whole IUD thing scares me a touch now. I know this probably isn't very common but a gal I work with had one in and was having issues. Two weeks ago she was cramping so bad she went to the ER. They ended up taking it out and then decided to do an ultrasound. They discovered that her body was trying to get it out and her tube had bust and she had 500CC of blood outside because she was bleeding. She had to have emergency surgery to go in and have it fixed.

I am having a terrible time with my BCP. I don't know what we are going to do. Not that we get to DTD all that often anyway between my work his school and just being frustrated and exhaused.

I hope I didn't scare you. Good luck deciding.

Thanks for the input, ladies.

Mari - it's not that I shouldn't be on a hormonal

Hi Ella,

I never had Mirena-hormonal BC and I don't mix, but several women from my playgroup board had them put in.

I had a Mirena in place from November 2008 until July 2010. For the first year I had it in place, it was totally fine. I had no idea it was there, worked great, etc.

Around the end of 2009, I started having crazy mood swings, nausea, fatigue, etc. around AF. Then, I started skipping periods and the symptoms increased in severity and lasted longer. By spring of 2010, I was having mondo IPS symptoms for half the month every month. I was a hormonal basketcase and so tired all the time. I ended up getting it removed in July because I couldn't stand the rollercoaster anymore and the symptoms went away as soon as I had my first AF after having it removed (which started 3 days after the removal).

Anyway, long story short, I can't recommend it. I know a lot of women have no trouble on it, but I'm very sensitive to synthetic hormones (I was a mess on the pill, too), and it still does put out a small amount of hormones. My OBGYN tried to tell me that it was impossible for the Mirena to cause the symptoms I experienced because the hormones are only released into the uterus, but I've spoken with other women who've had the same problems, and, hello, my uterus is part of my body and connected to my bloodstream, lol.

I know how tough it is not to have any good BC options. That's part of the reason why we're having #2 ahead of schedule. My body can't tolerate any hormonal BC at all, so we're having #2, and then DH will get the big V, hehe.

Oh, and yes, it did cause weight gain, not significant weight gain, but I had 5 lbs. hanging around that just would not come off no matter how diligent I was with diet and exercise and I lost them in the first week after I got the Mirena taken out.
