My MW advised me to have a pediatrician picked out by my 6th month. Since that is approaching, I figured I better get on it. I used to volunteer in the Peds unit at my local hospital so they gave me the names of

I was super lazy about picking a pediatrician. I have a sort of weird health insurance (Kaiser) where the Dr's and the insurance are all the same company. So, I knew I would have to pick a Kaiser Dr. in my city who was currently accepting patients. I just waited till James was born, and decided if I didn't like the first one I went to, I would change at that point. (there were onle 3 to pick from) IDK, I don't have super strong opinions about anything per se and so I didn't feel like I would know if I liked someone or not if I talked to them before baby was born, also in the hospital you just get whatever Dr. is on call for Kaiser right then, so you don't have to have someone picked out at the hospital. (for OB and Ped).

Anyway, I liked the lady I went to for James first appointment fine. She was personable, seemed to address all my concerns well. I don't 100% agree with her on everything down the line, but no blaring problems. Anyway, it's probably good to go and interview pediatricians and pick one out ahead of time, It's just not something I did.

I'm sure you already know all this, but thing you probably want discuss with them would be; how you plan to vaccinate, what sort of things you want/don't want in the hospital (vitamin k, circumcision, etc), BFing/FFing (make sure your Dr. is super supportive of your feeding choice) things like that. Good luck!

When I had my first DD I was on Medicaid so I just picked a doctor from a book and went to the office. It was the very first visit and I thought everything was good at first, but then when I missed an appointment for her for her shots and tried to get another appointment they told me that I would have to wait like 3 months to get in. I switched at that point. Then the second Pediatrician I took her to I like well enough, but I feel like some doctors are like hair stylist they put on a great show for you the first appointment and then you get to see how it will be later on. I kept her there and when I had DD#2 they both went to that doctor's office. After awhile we didn't get to see the doctor that we picked and someone else kept coming in the office to see us. I switched from that office to my dr. who at the time I liked well enough. She is a family doctor so I like that she would see all of us. She use to be a OB/GYN so that was also good to me. DH however doesn't really like her anymore and thinks that the advice and information she gives to us we could have come up with ourselves. He thinks she just likes to bring us in to collect a co-pay so I am actually in the process of switching the girls again and really I am dreading doing that since I like to have a relationship with the doctor.

My advice to you is to speak to neighbors as well and see if they like their pediatrician if you can or friends around you as this is what my boss did and she says that her pedi came highly recommended by many of the women in her neighborhood.

I wish I could same the same for me but I am still looking and will take advantage of having a new baby to find a better pediatrician.

I asked my OB who he recommended, and he said the name of the pediatrician who is the son of the pedi that I had as a kid.

Hi Grace,

We're actually planning for a homebirth so I don't think there will be a pediatrician visit until we bring the baby for it's first appointment.

I don't really have strong feelings about vaccines either but DH does want to ask the Dr about circumcision. In his country, they do it at a later age but that would be strange to do here and he doesn't want to cause unnecessary pain to our son (if we do end up having a boy that is!) at an

Hi Jay,

Sorry to hear that you're still looking for a good pediatrician but I think it is important for you to feel comfortable with the doctor you and your family are going to.

I never even thought to ask my neighbors - the people next door to us have three kids

Hi Julie,

Wow, how cool that you're still seeing the same family of doctors!

Unfortunately, I no longer go to my OB and my MW

That's right, I knew you were doing a home birth, I guess I forgot... Anyway, good luck deciding. James got his circumcision I think the second day after he was born or something, we were still in the hospital, that's definitely something you'll want to ask the pediatrician about anyway (if you have a boy!) Good luck finding someone that works for you.

6 mths seems early, but I guess there's always the chance of stuff happening to make it difficult to do later on. Personally, I'd start with 3 & see how you feel about them. If you're not totlaly thrilled with any of them, then move on to interview more.

Hi Noel,

Yeah, I don't know what to think about vaccinations. I haven't really done any research on it but I've heard all the controversy. DH and I were both vaccinated on-schedule and have had no health issues. I know my MW is very against them. Guess I'll have to discuss with DH and see what he thinks.

Thanks for all the info!
