P&PT for Selin

We had to rush Selin to the ER early this morning because she was having a terrible reaction to amoxicilin. Her face was swollen and she was covered head to toe with hives.

They gave her a steroid and an iV and she's been admitted for observation. We're waiting to see the dr and then we should know more. Hopefully she'll go home today.

P&PT for Selin. What a way for her to find out she's allergic. KUP.

Thanks everyone. We're still in the hospital, but Selin is MUCH better than when we came through the ER this morning and we should be getting discharged in a few hours.

It started on Thursday after her last dose of amoxicilin for her ear infection. She started getting little red splotches on her body and I thought it was heat rash because it was pretty hot that day. It got worse on Friday and so I called the ped and spoke to a nurse who stupidly told me to do nothing and that it was just a reaction to the antibiotic, she was not allergic and that she would be better in 4-5 days.

Well by yesterday, she had hives all over and was
itching like crazy so I called the ped again and talked to one of the docs and she said the nurse was wrong, she was having an allergic reaction and to give her Benadryl every 4-6 hours. So we did that for the rest of the day and throughout the night.

I gave her a dose at 2:30am and next thing I knew, DH was frantically waking me up around 4am and said her face was swollen and that she had been fussing for the last half hour. I felt horrible that I didn't even hear her, and our rooms share a wall, but I must've been really tired.

I called the ped's answering service and the on call
doc (just happened to be the same one I spoke to
yesterday) said to go to the ER right away. So off we
went and I started crying and shaking in the car
because she looked so bad (her eyes were almost
swollen shut) and I was scared.

They gave her a steroid and some Benadryl in the ER
and then we were admitted to the ped unit where we are now. It is amazing how quickly the steroid worked. She is almost 100% back to normal with the exception of a few marks here and there. Thankfully she's been eating/drinking just fine and is amazingly playing quietly in the bed (if only she'd do that at home - ha!) We're just waiting for the doc to come by and discharge her (you know how long that takes - ugh!)

I finally got her down for a decent nap. She would nurse to sleep in the bed and then wake up when the nurse would come to check her. Thankfully she fell back asleep after the last nurse check. We both need some sleep. I didn't go to bed until after 11 last night because I had to give her a dose, then was up at 2:30am and then I woke up at 4am for good.

Oh and when we were walking from the ER to the peds unit, I saw a woman in labor walking in with her DH and it totally made me wish I was PG again. :-)

I'm glad she's doing better. I can't imagine how scary that must have been. I wonder why it took so long for the reaction to show up.
