Scared To Death :(

Last night was the worst night of our lives. At about 9:30pm, Evan spit up a rather large amount of BM (even though he ate about 2 hours earlier), and seconds later his eyes were rolling back, his body was stiff as a board, and he was convulsing. That lasted for about 5 seconds, and then he broke into this huge wail, and his body was still stiff.By the time we got to the hospital, he could move normally and was very sleepy.

We ended up taking him to the emergency room where we spent the night. He got a bunch of blood work done. They did a CT scan to rule out any bleeding or swelling of the brain (that came back normal, thank God). They also did a chest Xray, and found some "streaking" which could be evidence for fluid in the lungs (that could be from him sucking in some of the spit up).

We got transfered to pediatrics at about 6am and have been there ever since. He has gotten more blood work done and they did a spinal tap on him this afternoon to check for infections. He will have to wait until Monday to get more tests done (EEG, ECG).

We are absolutely scared, upset, freaked out, etc. etc.. Right now. We'd like to stay with him in the hospital, but there is one chair that pulls out into a make-shift bed in the room so we're not sure what we'll do. I can't imagine leaving him alone though, and neither can DH. I'm starting to get really scared that this is going to be Evan's life - that he'll be in and out of the hospital for various things because he was born early. It breaks my heart just thinking about it.

Any positive thoughts or prayers you can send our way would be much appreciated.

Well, we met with a neurologist, and he's not convinced it wasn't a seizure. So, Evan is going to get an MRI and another EEG done in the next day or two. We're not sure what to think, but we're both concerned and scared. The nurses said we should sleep at home tonight, but there is just no way we can be away from him right now.

Alyssa - Thank you for taking the time to update us on baby Evan. Stay strong and just do what you are comfortable with. I cannot even imagine being in your situation - I would be a wreck!

I also wanted to ask, if you don't mind, sending me a PM with your email address so I can scan an article I was just reading the other night. It was about a family whose infant son had seizures within 24 hours of delivery and he is a healthy, happy, and SEIZURE-FREE two yo today!! I thought it might help you. The article also gives some medical explanations for seizures and I believe some resource information.

((HUGS)) I wouldn't want to leave him either. I am sure the neurologist is doing this to rule out any and all causes. In my experience they prefer to be over cautious with babies and children and run every test possible. I hope you have good news soon.

Thank you for the continued updates on baby Evan, Alyssa. I'm just so sorry you are going through this with him :( But I'm glad the tests are coming back normal... though of course this is all must still be very scary and concerning. I am thinking of you and DH and Evan!

Hey Mari - thanks for asking. We're basically waiting on a few tests right now. We know it's not an infection of any kind (blood, urine, spinal fluid, etc.), and it's not a genetic issue. We're waiting to get back results from an EEG, and he has an MRI scheduled for tonight (these will rule out brain issues). We're also waiting on more blood test results that will confirm his jaundice levels are still going down.

If all of those tests come back negative, then the convulsions were probably just caused by Evan breathing in fluid when he spit up. If that's the case, then we'll most likely be discharged tomorrow and our family doctor can follow up with things. Fingers crossed that is the case!! We'll know a lot more tomorrow, so I'll post an update then.

Any P&PT for Evan would be much appreciated!

Alyssa,

I am definitely thinking of your family and sending you all my positive thoughts. I am so sorry to hear what you and your sweet baby have been going through. I hope that you will get a clear diagnosis (of nothing serious) soon. I also hope that it is some comfort to know that you seem to be in good medical hands. I still can't imagine how scarey this must be for you.

Thinking of you!
