School Cut off dates

If you're little one is born after the cut off date in your district, will you just deal with it and hold them a year or will you find a way around it?

I ask because we are already looking into ways around our states Sept. 30 cutoff. It totally bothers me that if my child is ready for K at just shy of 5, I don't even have the option to send him. Schools here will only accept after cut off kids if you started in another state or private school. I have actually considered that when William is ready for K, registering him in Ct starting school there and then 'moving' to where we are or we will end up sending him to catholic school for a year.

Our state's cutoff is Sept. 1st but it won't be an issue for us since Selin is a Feb. baby and will be about 5-1/2 when she starts KG.

I've learned since I started teaching at the Catholic school that there are ways around it, at least in a private school setting. Our pastor accepts kids in the preK program who will be turning 3 or 4 and in the KG program who will be turning 5

Our cut off date is Sept. 1, both my boys are Jan/Feb b-days so they are not close.

In my state they are very strict about enforcing the b-day thing. Personally I thought DS1 was ready for school at 4.5 years, but you know now I don't think it would have made a difference. Kids start school at all levels of readiness, and have all levels of ability, and just because they are ready in some aspects does not make them ready in other aspects. Being the youngest in your class has a lot of draw backs (I know I started college at 17), not to mention being smaller and not as physical as your classmates. Gah... this topic has been discussed to death over on the GC board (DS1 has an IQ of 139)... there are pros, there are cons.

I think it really depends on the child and their social maturity/school readiness.

Good question, Elyse. I've been on both sides of the issue, with birthdays in both August and September (our cutoff date is Sept. 1). There was an article put out that discusses parents who hold their kids back a year to give them an edge, and they found that any advantages disappear by the end of elementary school:

For my boys, it worked out well for all parties. My twins were ready for kindy right after the age of 5 so off they went. They've done extremely well academically, and would have been bored if I had held them back. My youngest has the September birthday and while academically he would have been ready, emotionally I think it was good he had another year at home. He's also done very well academically, and is always the "good example" for the other students :) I'd say follow your instincts, you know your child best.
