White grape juice is good for dehydration. Are you alternating between ibuprofen and Tylenol? Any signs of gas or constipation?

If he really doesn't seem himself I would call the ped. That's our ped's rule of thumb, especially as they get older.

I hope he feels better soon and you get some sleep.

i haven't tried giving him grape juice yet, only apple and pear...i think i've been giving him apple, usually watered down by half for the extra water (he won't drink water straight). i did wind up taking him up to the hospital to get checked out and the doc there thinks he has strep on account of the red/white-patchy and swollen throat. the short screen came back negative, but he's pretty sure the lab culture will be positive and so i'm giving him antibiotic now.

i didn't have ibuprofen, just acetaminophen, so i stopped and got ibuprofen on the way home and gave him some and now i'm alternating on the nurses advice.

since i posted he's been a little better about taking formula...he took 3 ounces at the hospital while waiting for the doctor, and then took four more at 8pm and 2 more an hour later. now the trick is just getting him to sleep, which is easier alternating the ibuprofen and acetaminophen, but still involves 20-30 minutes of him fussing and sometimes crying until he actually goes to sleep, in spite of being obviously exhausted.

poor kid. breaks my heart that i can't just fix it for him when he's crying because he doesn't feel well.

I'm glad you took him, strep makes sense with not wanting to drink, etc. Feel better Tab... and I hope you both get some rest.

Oh Carly, you poor thing.... A sick baby is so a heartbreaking!! ((hugs)) Keep giving him the ibuprofen and the antibiotics and he'll get better. I think you are doing the right thing in insisting with the juice... We (the moms who breastfeed) have it slightly easier because the boob is like a natural soother to the baby... In your case, keep insisting with the bottle and try to hold him as much as possible so he can sleep better. Do whatever it takes, even if it means co-sleeping for a couple of nights. It's all a matter of survival now, you will get things back on track when he gets better.
