Still taking two naps

So toddler questions always seem to get more activity than our toddler/kid thread (oh so sad - but we definitely need to merge with the babies!). So... just a poll out of curiosity - is your toddler still taking two naps? And for those with older children, do you remember when your child dropped to one nap?

Barrett loves his morning nap - the poor kid is ready to go down by 9:30 just about every morning. And it works great for him, but it's starting to cut into our toddler social life :) All his 'friends' his age take one nap, so they go down right after lunch just as Barrett is getting ready to play (he takes an afternoon nap around 2:30 - right when all the other babies are waking up!). And I work or have class in the afternoon M-Th so we can't get together then. I definitely make him tough it out without a morning nap when there is an event worth going to, but we've become the antisocial family this fall ;) Oh well - at least I have time to nap and get housework done ;)

I read this the other day when the boards were "read-only" then forgot to come back and post a reply! Elena is down to one nap a day and it is usually only 30 minutes. Every so often she'll go a bit longer, but NEVER more than an hour - and that's very rare. However she generally sleeps 12 hours at night so I guess that is okay for her. She went from 3 naps down to 2 around 8 months, and then down to 1 shortly after her first birthday. I'm thinking she won't even need that by the time she is 2, but for all I know she'll still be taking it when she's 5. LOL.

Keep in mind the typical 1 to 2 yo needs 10 to 13 hours of sleep a day. That's the wide range, and when you look at all the nap time possibilities as well bedtime and wake-times you're going to see there is no real "norm" for the number of naps and the lengths of naps. As long as they are getting the sleep they need, that is all that really matters.

Brita just an FYI when babies switch to 1 nap they don't all take a 2 to 3 hour nap. Eloise rarely like I can count on one hand since 10 months has taken a 3 hour nap. She takes occasional 2 hour naps, but she mainly only takes 1, 1 hour to 1 1/2 hour nap a day. She apparently finds that sufficient for her needs. So just be aware even when he switches to one nap he won't necessarily take a lovely 3 hour nap, which I do miss because Desmond took those nice long naps and it was a nice break in the afternoon.

Also Eloise's nap time is around 2pm, sometimes she goes down a little earlier then 2, around 1 or 1:30 and sometimes she goes down later then 2, around 3. So the nap may not end up being in the early afternoon either. Eloise tends to wake up around 8:30 in the morning so she goes a long period before her nap. To be fair, I can't have her nap much before 1, 3 days a week because I pick up Desmond from preschool at 12:15, but she also shows no interest in an earlier nap either so it works out.

Honestly I am half afraid she is going to drop her nap in the next 6 months or so, she is already starting to do what Desmond did before we dropped his nap, if she naps she doesn't want to go to bed at 8:30 and will sometimes stay up till 10/10:30 or later! The few days she hasn't napped she is happy to go down around 8/8:30.

He usually gets up between 8:30 and 9:00. We move so slowly in the mornings though, it's hard to get going anywhere before 9:30 or 10. It's really nice, he doesn't stay up especially late either, he typically goes down around 8:30.

James used to always take two, two hour naps, and then when he first dropped his morning nap he would take 1 two hour nap, which was pretty hard, but now, he'll typically sleep 3+ hours at his afternoon nap, it just took some time of adjustment before his body realized he was only going to get one nap I think. He also woke up about an hour earlier when he was doing two naps, with the same bedtime. So it seems to have all evened out, but it was a bit touch and go during the transitional time.

Barrett has occasionally refused his afternoon nap (especially if the time is off), but he sleeps 1.5 hours for his first nap whether it is at 9:30 AM or noon - none of this 2-3 hours of nap I hear about - so we both do better with two still :) I know it's completely normal to transition anytime between 1 and 2 years, but I was just curious as to what was more typical. Apparently Barrett's friends are more normal than I thought ;)

Grace - How late does James sleep in the morning?!

We've been on one nap for about 2 months now-we stopped the second nap for the same reason Grace mentioned-Evan would be impossible to get to sleep for that second nap, so I had a choice between an early 1 hour nap and possibly a second 1-2 hour nap with resistance or one 2-3 hour nap in the late morning/early afternoon.

I think James switched around a year. We have problems with playdates too though. James has a lot of younger friends still on two naps, and then the friends his age nap at 11:30 or 12 where James is more like 1:30 or 2. So while we can get together with his toddler friends in the morning, they always want to hang out before James is even out of bed, and they have to go home pretty early. I would try to change his sleeping times, but then he would never see DH, and I feel like him seeing DH has to be a priority.

It was interesting how fast it changed though. I thought James would be on two naps until he was two because he slept so much and seemed to really need them, and then all of a sudden is just started to change and it started being harder and harder to put him down for one of his two naps. When Barrett start doing that, I highly recommend getting activities in the morning to keep him awake so he'll drop the morning nap. It took me many afternoon of James being extremely grumpy, and refusing to take a second nap before I figured that out. Now we have an activity of some sort pretty much every morning. Enjoy the extra naps while you have them, they won't last forever, and I'm sure Barret's social skills will be fine ;-)

Brita I think it depends on the child. Both of mine gave up their 2nd nap around 10 months. So we've been on only one nap for quite awhile now. I know some of the kids in Desmond's month group kept up two naps until almost 2. It still shocks me that some of them are still napping at all since Desmond gave up naps at 2 1/2 and Eloise looks like she might do it even earlier, eek!

In my experience, some kids are nappers, others are not. Sounds like you have a napper. I don't think Ray dropped his 2nd nap until he was over 2. He was still taking 1 nap a day 4 out of 7 days a week at 6.
