Lighter shades of amber work better, from what I can tell. We get ours from Inspired by Finn. If you join her facebook group she often has a coupon code up. Size wise measure baby's neck and add an inch, ir just go with the smallest size, which is what I normally do.
Cons are it is a necklace so could be considered a strangulation hazard. I am sure there are others but that is the main one that comes up.
Pros are it helps, or at least it did for Desmond and Eloise, and it helps DH and my headaches.
I've had Evan wearing one since he was about 2 months old (when he started having some teething symptoms). I bought mine locally though (at a boutique in Vegas), but there are plenty of online sources. As for sizing, Evan's is 12 inches long--it still fits him very well at age 2. It's got 3 different shades of amber on it, so I don't know if one shade has been more effective than another. When you buy one, make sure each bead has its own knot-that way, if it breaks, only one bead is loose (limiting the amount of beads that could be swallowed)--Evan's has never broken or caught on anything in the 2 yrs he's worn it.
As for pros and cons: Pros--I really felt like it worked for Evan-on a few occasions I forgot to put it on him and he really seemed more irritable when he wasn't wearing it. It's also stinking cute:)
Cons-Once Evan turned 1, I felt like the necklace didn't help as much-could be /i need to clean it somehow? The random comments from strangers about a boy wearing a necklace:)
I got mine at a local baby boutique as well. Mine is 13 inches I think and its a lighter colored one...I had a darker one as well but lost it at the mall. I didnt notice a difference in the way they worked based on color, they both worked well. Pros--It works. Cons--Cant think of any other than a strangulation hazard but he never wears it around his neck to bed, I wrap it around his ankle. ...even the boy wearing a necklace thing wasnt really an issue, more of a curiosity for people. Once explained what it was for, it was fine.
Katie- It's for teething--the amber resin supposedly soaks into their skin and relieves pain. I think that amber is supposed to boost immunity to, but am not sure.
