James' first birthday is coming up, and I'm kind of at a loss as to what to get him. I know he probably needs new toys, but I don't really know what kind of stuff he would enjoy at this age.

Soo... for those of you with older/similarly aged kids what were their favorite toys at this age? Any toys that were really a waste of money and they didn't enjoy? I'm ok with things he'll grow into a little, I'd rather get those than things he'll grow out of really fast. Also he walks pretty well, so he probably wouldn't enjoy walker/push toys as much.

Thanks ladies!!

Ray got a walk behind thing for his 1st birthday. As he wasn't walking yet, he loved it.

We also got him this rocking plush wooden snail. It plays music, etc. It's one of 2 babies items I still have. It's been kept as a family heirloom.

Our sitter's DS turned 1 a few years ago, Ray got him blocks that make music and have animals inside of them.

I'd actually say a ride on toy is better for around 18 months then 12 months. Eloise likes the one we have for Desmond but she can't really get it to move on her own and Desmond didn't really get them moving on his own till around 18 months either.

A play kitchen is nice too, Eloise likes the one we have, Desmond plays with it a lot more then she does though and we mainly got it for him and for her in the future so I don't mind her not playing with it a lot yet. I really think it is also an 18 month to 2 year old toy though. It works for earlier ages, but they really tend to start playing with it a lot around those ages.

I second what Sarah said about pull-along toys. Barrett has a couple and he loves them (the kid doesn't even walk yet, he just pulls them along as he crawls) He loves pull-along toys so much that he plays with my hair straightener like it's a pull-along toy :)

He's starting to get into blocks a little - we have a dump truck with mega-blocs (like giant legos), and Barrett tries to use them correctly. We have a kiddie pool and water table, both of which he enjoys and are great for hot summer days. And Barrett has a train set that he's actually starting to play with 'correctly' a lot more. And we have several ride-on toys that Barrett likes (he likes being pushed around on them, he has no idea how to make them move correctly). Barrett got a My Pal Scout dog (by leapfrog) for his birthday which he enjoys but I think it's just because the dog plays music, and Barrett loves bopping to music.

I'm pretty sure his favorite toy is my hair straightener or maybe my cell phone :D

I would second the ride-on car. (Or maybe for a second birthday present or a big brother present in January ;-) The kids at the daycare (I used to work at) LOVED those, but usually when they were a bit older.

Something like a movable plastic sandbox is always enjoyable, too, kids love to play in the sand!!

I think push along and pull along toys are probably the best at this age! I got Teddy two push along ones - this is the one he actually chose himself: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/40062029

A Pull Toy was a huge hit here for Desmond's first birthday. He loved it and still uses it today at 3. Something like this (http://www.amazon.com/Brio-30304-BRIO-Pull-Along-Engine/dp/B000EF81CU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1273880173&sr=8-3 ) there are a lot of options out there. Books are always good, Eloise is a huge stuffed animal fan so she has loved her stuffed animals and dolls, I still need to pick her up a doll bed from IKEA actually. Balls are also a huge hit here either OBalls or playground balls. Both are loved.

They both love our tent and tunnel as well, there are tent and tunnel sets or you can just buy them separately and use them together when you wish. Eloise and Desmond love crawling through the tunnel and they both enjoy the tent too. IKEA has both of these fairly inexpensively as well if you have one near you, or you can go for something more like this ( http://www.amazon.com/Pacific-Play-Tents-Hide-Tunnel/dp/B00000IUX7/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1273880375&sr=1-1 ).

There are always blocks and stuff as well. But the pull toy an tent and tunnel are the toys that have been played with consistently since before Desmond was 1 and still used now.
