Update on Evan
11
Fri, 10-22-2010 - 11:42am

So, Evan has been moved out of the NICU, into what they call the step-down nursery (the babies are healthier, and are one step closer to going home). His glucose levels are great, so he is off the IV and off all other monitors too. He has a bit of jaundice now though, so they're treating him for that - basically he's in an incubator with a couple bright lights shining on him. Not sure how long that treatment will go for. We'll find out more today.

I was basically an emotional wreck yesterday. I think the biggest reason is, because he's so big, I keep thinking he's full term and that he should be acting/feeding like a full term baby. But, he's NOT and I have to remember that. It's going to take time for him to learn how to breast feed (he's getting better though!) and it's going to take time for us to learn how to take care of him too.

We'll be heading in to see him this afternoon again - so excited to see him again!

Oh, BTW, I've made a photo album for him here:

and I'll be updating it as much as I can :)

He is beautiful, Alyssa, and you are so right--he is slightly premature and being in the NICU and having other health concerns (though thankfully very minor) is not an ideal start to nursing.

It's great that Evan is doing so well-he's adorable!

I just wanted to add-My Evan and I are proof that BFing can take a long time to learn--I couldn't even get him to latch on regularly until he was 6 weeks old (and he was full term!)!

Evan will figure out the breastfeeding, just give him time. I think the hardest part is realizing that it doesn't make you a failure. I cried several times during the month that I pumped since Peter and I couldn't get it figured out. Just keep trying; that's all you can do.

He's absolutely gorgeous, and I'm so glad to hear he's doing well! I can't wait to hear that he's going home!

Thanks for the kind words of wisdom, ladies - it really helps to hear the experiences of others. Evan had a really good day today, and is feeding better and better. We're getting a lot more positive feedback from the nurses in the nursery he is in now. They are letting us take care of him when we're there, and only help when we need/ask. That's a nice change from the NICU where they kind of took over a lot of the time. We're definitely getting more comfortable with things, and are feeling much more positive today.

Adrienne - that story is amazing! I love how it shows that breastfeeding is something that comes from practice and is not 100% intuitive (like it's made out to be!).

Hugs all - the support on this board is so wonderful :)

That all sounds so good! It is nice that you can go home while he is in the hospital. A good way to tank up on energy for when he comes home soon. I found the hospital environment very stressful and not exactly beneficial when it came to things like breastfeeding, so hang in there! You are all doing great- I know he will get the hang of things quickly once you all are settled at home.
