Updates!!

I think we need an updates thread, because I miss hearing about how everyone's babies are doing.

So for us, James is 4 months now!! I can't believe how fast it's going, I was looking at him the other day and wondering where my little baby went, it's crazy how fast they change!

We went for his four month appoint last week, and I was really unhappy with the Dr. so I think we'll be trying to do some insurance adjustments and find another one soon. At this appointment James was 15lbs 14 oz, and 25 in long. Which I think makes him about normal. The new dr. didn't tell me what percentile it is like the old one did.

Has anyone else had a baby that dropped drastically on the percentile chart? Like I'm sure James is doing fine, and he still seems big and healthy and everything, but he's gone from the 93rd% percentile to like the 60th or something.

Anyway, everything is going well, we're still not sleepign through the night, but he does (typically) only wake up once in the middle of the night around 5am, so that has been nice!

James still doesn't roll over, but he's getting very close, and he can tripod sit for a minute or so before he leans too far one way or the other.

How are all the other WTT babies??

I completely understand, "smoking mums" are one of my pet hates... no matter what age. My MIL also smokes but thankfully I could convince her even when I was still pregnant to smoke outside when we are visiting. Do you think your MIL will make this small concession to Daphne?

I think she will, she seems very nice, DH said he would send her an email before we leave asking her to smoke outside while we are there.

James is 5 months old today! Time goes so fast...

Anyway he's doing great. I think he weighs about 17 lbs now (weighed him on the bathroom scale) so he's no longer huge for his age, but he looks healthy and pudgy and he seems to be gaining well, so I'm not too worried. I think he's 27 inches which seems like a lot of height to gain in a month, so maybe I'm just bad at measuring, anyway he's definitely at least 26!

I wasn't planning to start James on any solids until 6 months, but he seemed really interested and is showing all the signs of readiness. So... I bought some rice cereal just in case I decided I wanted to give him some. (I know rice cereal isn't necessary etc., but it seemed like an easy first food to see how he does etc, and mixed with BM, it does have nutritional benefit! While baby led weaning is really appealing to me, for some reason the idea of James' first food being something I would eat just really freaks me out. I feel like after nothing but breastmilk we should ease into food, or something, weird, I know...) Anyway, last week I left James with Dylan for the longest I've ever left him (4 hours) and I told DH if James was just really unhappy with me being gone he could try giving him a little rice cereal. I didn't think he would actually do it, but he did and he told me James liked it. Which of course piqued my curiosity so I had to try it too. He seems to enjoy it quite a bit. I'm not planning on giving it to him regularly yet, but it seems to be something he enjoys, so we've been having fun with that the last couple days.

Sleep is still not going amazing. James naps pretty well during the day. But every night he wakes up around 1 hour after going down, and he won't settle back down. He won't nurse back to sleep, I can't cuddle him back to sleep he just cries and squirms for like 30 minutes. Sometimes he'll do the same thing a couple of times later in the night too. It doesn't seem to matter very much how I handle these wakings, he refuses to go back to sleep easily. I miss the days when he would just wake up two or three times, nurse and be back to sleep.

Anyway, that's our update, I took some pictures today, and you can look at them here:

James is such a cutie! And 17 lbs does seem huge to me, but then again my almost-5-month-old is no more than 14 lbs, if that. LOL. But she's also a girl and on the smaller end of the scale. :)

OMG I am so afraid to get Elena's ears pierced! On the one hand, it would be nice to get it over with so she doesn't remember it - I was 4 and it hurt like HELL. On the other hand, since I DO remember what it felt like, I can't imagine subjecting my poor baby girl to that! You'll have to post some pictures of Kaylee though!

Elena started sort of sitting in my lap today for like 2 or 3 seconds at a time now. LOL!

The rice cereal myth is based on iron stores and absorption. Breastmilk and formula provides little iron, and doctors used to think that baby's iron stores from pregnancy had run out by 6 months, so it was "necessary" to start giving them fortified rice cereal at that point or even sooner.

However, what they have discovered now is that iron stores of BF babies last at least a year or longer. Formula, on the other hand, makes tiny tears in the intestines which leech iron stores more quickly. The reason they thought iron stores only lasted six months was because the original research was conducted during the FF heyday.

So, BF babies actually need NOTHING but BM for at least the first year, or even longer--though most babies start to become interested in solid food between 6 mos and a year and so it is fine to take the babies lead on eating, but if you are BFing on demand, you NEVER have to worry, until after at least the first year, if the baby is getting enough calories or nutrients. BM is the absolute best thing the baby can be eating and he/she can communicate quite effectively if they are hungry!

If you are FF, you should start rice cereal at 6 months for the iron and encourage other iron and vitamin rich foods.

HTH--I spend way too much time reading about BFing. LOL.

We're back! We had lots of fun at Disney, Eloise loved It's a Small World, Desmond liked almost everything and loved the characters.

Eloise is standing for half a second to 2 seconds on her own now, eek! She is also cruising quite well. She fell yesterday at my Grandmother's house and cut her mouth, so there was a lot of blood, but she is fine.

Both Desmond and Eloise's sleep schedules are a bit off thanks to Disney, I am hoping we can get them back to normal since we are home now. Eloise is waking about 3 times a night, around 2am, 4am and 6am and then later at either 7 or 8am and then sleeping till 10amish. I wish she would drop one or two of the night feedings, but I am not too worried about it either, I will night wean her around 14 months like I did with Desmond.

She is really fast with crawling now, I turn around and she is on the other side of the room. Right now I am trying to catch up on everything after being off line for 10+ days.

Same here about the STTN/co-sleeping Jan. Even though we planned on co-sleeping and I don't have any logical problems with it, I sometimes feel guilty because babies are "supposed" to sleep in cribs. I'm sure you're doing what is best for you a Kaeden.
