Weaning/Switching to milk

Hi ladies!

So, Evan is just about 10 months, and is still on formula. He's not really weaning himself like I thought he would. From what I've read, as babies eat more solids, they will reduce the number of milk (formula or BM) feedings per day. But, that's not what he's doing. He eats solids four times a day and still has five bottles a day. But, he seems to need less formula in each bottle (he used to have 6oz every bottle, now he'll have anywhere from 4-6 depending on the time of day). As a note, he does eat and ingest a lot of solids, so that's not the issue.

Any other formula feeding mommy experience this? Did you actively wean your baby from the bottle, or just let it happen? If you just let it happen, how long did it take?

Also, and this can be for everyone, when did you start giving your child cow's milk?

Thanks so much for any ideas/suggestions!

Kate - Do you mean is it an option for Selin or for my friend's son? I'd rather just adapt to whatever her son is drinking since his allergies are so severe. I don't even know if she'll want milk there since she didn't seem that interested in it at the other sitter.

Liz - I meant to answer your question earlier. When I was getting ready to HUTH, I started by mixing 1 oz of rice milk with BM and then gradually kept increasing the rice milk until she was getting only rice milk. At the advice of my sitter, I started bringing it in sippies instead of bottles and we had no issues with the transition.

Christine: Is soy milk an option? Ray has and still does drink more soy than cows milk.

I would ask, but they aren't good with breastfed babies. His lead teacher is trying, but she couldn't understand why he gets such "small" bottles compared to the other babies.

Liz - not a BTDT, but I think the idea of replacing one of his bottles with regular milk would probably work. You can always send a bottle of BM too, just in case, but I'm guessing it won't matter much since you want to cut that amount of that bottle back anyway.

You might want to ask the staff at daycare too. We've found them to be incredibly helpful when it comes to having ideas about things like this (after all, they've dealt with a lot more kids than we have!).

Piggy-backing on Alyssa's question--

What's the best way to start transitioning to milk? I want to start sending some with Peter to daycare so I can be ready to HUTH in December. Right now, he still gets BM in bottles, and a sippy of water. His schedule is: Breakfast (with water) at 8a, bottle (4oz) at 8:30a. Lunch (with water) at 11a. Bottle between 1:30-2:30 (4oz) after he wakes up from his nap. Snack at 2:30 (with water). Bottle (3-4oz) at 4:30ish.

Could I just start sending milk for that last bottle? I'm trying to cut back the amount for it anyway, because he naps around 5:30-6:30, and I want him ready to nurse when I pick him up around 6p. My ultimate goal is to get him to the point he's drinking milk for the meals and taking a sippy of BM for a snack for a couple months. I plan to still nurse when we're together, so he won't get milk at home that often. For that matter, he doesn't really even want solids at home. All he ate Sunday was a carton of yogurt and part of a cinnamon roll.

We started offering Eliza cow's milk in a sippy cup at 1 year. She didn't really like it very much at first. So we just kept offering it to her at mealtime and now she has finally warmed up to it and will drink it with meals. She is still nursing though, so I haven't worried about how MUCH she is drinking...

Ella,

I've been wondering about this with Selin as she is still BFing about 3-5x/day. When I HUTH after her 1st birthday, I sent her to the sitter with rice milk but within a few months, she was barely finishing one sippy cup full. She just didn't seem that interested so I told the sitter to just give her water.

My ped just suggested that since she's still BFing, to continue the Vit D drops but didn't say that we have to offer milk in addition to that. She happily drinks water out of a sippy all day long, sometimes we give her a tiny bit of juice mixed in, but not everyday. She eats 3 meals a day plus 2 snacks.

I've been trying to figure out what to do when she starts going to the sitter again, to my friend, because my friend's son is deathly allergic to dairy so they drink almond milk. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to send her there with cow's milk, or ask them to provide it for her, just due to the risk of their son accidentally drinking it. I don't want to be responsible if he has an allergic reaction. It is so severe that he can't even touch dairy without breaking out.

I have a LLL meeting tomorrow night so maybe I'll bring it up then and see what the other mamas have to say.

William started on cow's milk just before 11 months. We finished our last container of formula and I figured it was close enough to 1 yr. He was weaned from nursing between 8 and 9 months as he totally lost interest and I was glad as I hated BF. William eats 6 or so times a day between actual meals and snacks. I don't know how much milk William drinks a day (lost count), but I do know that he goes through (by himself since dh and I only drink 2%) a gal and a half a week. He drinks tons of milk from a sippy cup and typically only drinks water out of my camelbak water bottles.

Thanks for sharing your experiences, everyone! It's nice to hear that most other babies still drink a lot of milk too.

In all honesty, I just want to stop using formula because it's so expensive! LOL! I think we'll start trying cow's milk at about a year. Hopefully he likes it and the transition from formula will be quick and easy.

We switched to cow's milk at a year. We give it to Teddy warm, now he will also drink it cold but it took a few months. He still probably drinks about 300-500mL (10-16 ounces) of milk a day. (2-3 bottles) but he eats fine so I don't mind. Our goal is to slowly transition to no bottles by the time he is 2.

He only gets water in his sippy cups but he will also drink milk out of a cup.

Alyssa, I think you should really let things flow on this...

At least with Fede at first he really ate very little, and needed milk to round up things. At that point I was EBF, but I did make the transition to cow's milk when he was 15 months.

It was a little traumatic... the weaning from the breast, I mean. But once he understood that now he was taking bottles with cow's milk, he loved it.

Oh, and although he eats really well now, he has 3 1/2 bottles a day!
