We're HOME!

After exactly 3 weeks in the nicu the girls were released to come home yesterday! It was kind of a flurry and in some ways I felt rushed out and had this whole letdown "Now what?" moment when we got home...

But 24 hours have passed and we've all survived! :) The girls have stayed on their schedule for the most part, eating every 4 hours, back to back, and largely sleeping in between. We get a good 2 to 2-1/2 hour break between feedings to nap, clean, etc. We knew when we were discharged that we might have some issues with feeding Juliette... their feeding tubes had only been out since Friday, and although both girls continued to gain weight on just bottle/breast feeding, Juliette has continued to be a pretty lazy little preemie eater, while Elia sucks it down. Elia's been taking 50-80ml per bottle feed and the nurses had been able to get about 50 out of Jules (she'll breastfeed for about 20 minutes usually, but I have no idea how much she's taking in). Clearly though, the nurses know what they're doing and we don't.

Welcome home to your sweet girls, Andi! What a wonderful feeling that is to have your family home. It sounds like they are strong little things! I hope that Juliette has gained weight when the nurse comes tomorrow. KUP!!

Aww, how exciting, Andi! How long will your DH be off? Have you thought about hiring someone to come help you (if my memory is correct, your families are out of state?)

Wtg on BFing! A friend of mine has twins (they're 17 mos old now) and she's also a LLL leader but she said she did have to supplement with formula in the hospital just to get the twins' weight up for discharge. Hoping for good at their weigh in tomorrow!

Post more pics!! :-D

Welcome home!!! I hope Juliette does better with her eating and is gaining weight-and that both girls just have "milk boogers" and nothing more! One thing you can do to see if they're getting enough while BFing is get a baby scale--I did that with EVan when he wasn't gaining well as a newborn, and still use it with Anna to check every once in a while.

Congratulations!!!! I'm sure Juliette will start gaining, she just needs to get used to BF. A good thing is that having twins, means that you probably will never have supply issues, so even if you need to supplement with formula for a while, you will have enough breast milk when she starts BF well.
