So I left my 4 week PP appointment with the mini pill, and I thought I knew what to do.

I was still on the minipill when AF returned as I had David in Dec and AF returned in April. I was on the minipill until July when I stopped BF. Then I went on the reg pill. But I think as long you are BF you are fine. You could also ask a pharmacist too.

I think different care providers do different things. After Barrett, the Dr. I saw said to stay on the mini-pill until I stopped breastfeeding. She also greatly emphasized the need to take it at the same time every day.

This time the mw said she likes to see you on something else (i.e. regular BC or IUD) after about 6 months. She feels that once nursing is well established and the baby is eating solids that taking regular BC shouldn't be a problem. My prescription was written with only 5 refills this time!

I feel your pain Kate as I just went through all this myself.

I had checked with my LLL leader as she has a BFing meds book and she told me the same thing, that the minipill is safe for BFing, as far as it not interfering with your milk supply (wish I still had the list she gave me but I threw it away), but whether or not it will protect you 99.9% from pgcy, is something your MW should be able to answer. I would ask to speak to a doc, not a nurse, because I have been misinformed many times by nurses (nothing against all you nurses out there, but

Kate, what was AF like? I think withdrawal bleeding can be a normal side effect from the minipill, but doesn't necessarily mean that you are fertile and cycling.

It was like AF... looking back I was certainly PMSing before hand. I had my mood swings, my typical changes in my bowels (sorry TMI), my anxiety increased, my boobs got tender. Once AF showed BFing became difficult and it was a struggle during it. I started out with brown spotting, that turned pink, then red, then became a very heavy flow for 4 days, then followed by 2 more days of spotting. It lasted about 8 days.
