I'd love to hear from you ladies who live far away from family and find out what you did for the birth and right after the baby came. Did you have family come immediately? Did you stagger visitors? My mom wants to be here as soon as possible, and I'm sure my ILs will want to be here soon as well. I just have no idea what I'm going to want in that week or two postpartum and it's challenging balancing wanting them to be involved and wanting space to yourself (especially if they're staying with us, which my mom will, but we're not sure about his parents). What did you ladies do, what did you like/wish you'd done differently?

My parents live four hours away and the IL's are about three hours away. What we did last time and what we will do again is this: Both grandmas came for the delivery, stayed a couple days and then went home. DH took the first week off of work, then my mom came the next week and MIL the week after that. It was great to have the help staggered a bit like that.

Our families are both in CA and we're in TN. My IL made their plans when the doc was saying I would go early, so they were here from Oct. 7-12, but since Ry wasn't born till the night of the 9th, they didn't get that much time with him. My mom knew my induction date was the 9th (even though I was due Sept. 30), so she planned to fly in on the 10th, and she was here 9 or 10 days I think. Smart lady, lol.

My mom stayed in our house, which was great and she was very helpful. My IL, thank God, stayed at a hotel. I liked the way we worked it pretty well. If your families have to make plans far in advance, and they can't stay for very long, I would recommend having them plan to come the week after your due date. You could go early, but a LOT of first babies are at least a few days late, and it would suck for them to miss everything by coming too early.

Thanks everyone! It's so helpful to hear what everyone has done. DH thinks I'm silly for stressing about it already, but I just want everyone's expectations in line!

Having had different things happen with my different babies, I recommend that you have at least the first week after baby is born with no one staying in your house. (In general, keep people actually staying at your house to the smallest amount for the shortest time possible) You will need some time to settle in & get to know your baby & having people, even very loving helpful ones, stay in the house the whole time can be oddly stressful at first. You don't htink that it will be, but it really is.

I would definitely try to get people to stagger their visits so that you don't have 10 out of town relatives visiting all at once. A few days between visitors can be really nice, too.

Also, for the first month after baby comes, it is absolutely your perogative, even imperitive, to say, 'Sorry, but I have to go take a nap now, while
