Interviewing Pediatrician Questions

I didn't really interview OB's or MW before we got prego. However, the hospital I am delivering at requires you to have a Ped for your baby before they will release you from the hospital. So I am planning on trying to interview a few of them. I was just wanting some help with a few questions to ask in the "new mommy appointment." I have an office selected that has 5 different Ped's. I still need to call and make the appointment, waiting on DH to get home so we can decide on a day/time when I call.

I really don't have much on my list as of right now. I know a couple of you have been through one or more of these. What were they like?

Thanks ladies. :)

Cassie - I'm assuming you will be meeting with one doctor who represents the whole practice. If I'm wrong, this may not be as applicable. Around here, most offices have set "meet & greet" times where there may be several expectant couples. The doctor gives a short talk, you get a tour of the office, and you get a chance to ask questions. Things that we asked/talked about were:

- vaccinations (especially Hep B - I was not comfortable giving that to a newborn and the doc was pretty candid about the reason they vac at the hospital)
- appts for sick children (weekends, evenings, etc)
- emergency procedures
- lactation consultant/breastfeeding support
- procedures for phone questions (i.e. do you get to immediately talk to a nurse, does the doctor call you back)
- what to expect at the hospital
- typical appointments that would be scheduled following release from the hospital
- How long the doctors had been with the practice (I wanted someplace without too much turnover)
- For a multiple doctor practice - do they encourage you to choose one doctor or rotate through the doctors?
- Educational materials/opportunities they provide

We actually only went to one office - it was in a good location and I was too close to my due date to be shopping around :P So far I have been very happy, and I know if I'm ever not, I can always switch!

Thank you Brita for your comments. I have a few questions in my head but until you have LO sometimes it is hard to know exactally.

I don't know about a meet and greet. I was told most places around here just set you up with what is called a new mommy appointment where you go in and talk to one of the ped's. I forgot to call today and get one set up so I'll have to wait until
Monday to see.

Thanks again for the BTDT thoughts!
