One thing to remember with a car with just one backseat, even if you only plan on having 2, it means if you are unlikely to be able to have an extra passenger, once there are two car seats there. So for instance when my Mom visit she has to rent a car/take our second car, since she can't fit in our main car with 2 car seats there.

That being said, if you get a car with a big backseat you maybe able to fit an extra passenger back there though it will likely be tight. With DH's car we can fit an adult in the back besides the two car seats, with my car no way.

If you don't have guests or extra riders often it probably isn't a huge concern, but my Mom is up to visit normally every 6 weeks or so, for at least a day or two, so it has actually been a semi consistent issue for us.

I actually had thought of that, Sarah, and decided it wasn't too big of a deal for us.

Christine, my Mom has an Altima, it works fine with 2 car seats, but there is not room for another passenger back there. The backseat is narrow enough that if you wanted to be able to fit an adult back there you would have to use specific car seats in specific settings to get it to work right, I am worried that I won't be able to fit 3 car seats in it when we go down to visit my parents. Fortunately I am pretty sure we can fit 3 car seats in my Dad's Lexus so we'll just have to use that instead if my parents don't have us rent a car.

I'm not planning on buying anything for at least another year or two (or more), but I want to give DH some things to think about since he likes to think about things for awhile, LOL!

I saw this topic and I am in a similar boat as Christine. We have two small cars, a 2001 Pontiac Sunfire and a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am. We plan on buying a mini van once our credit card debt is paid off in October 2012 and before baby #2 arrives which I am hoping is sometime in early 2013 the way things look now.

That way we can fit the two car seats and a dog. We have a Miniature Schnauzer and even with him it would be really squished. I usually sit in the back seat when we go on trips to see the family in Ohio with David and the dog (5 hour drive) and it is a pain but in case David gets fussy especially when he was younger. And, we don't want the dog to go through the windshield if we were to be in an accident. He has a seatbelt too.

We are renting a SUV when we go to Florida to see my in laws at the end of April so we have tons of room. That would be way too long in our small cars.

Adrienne, you are looking at a minivan. There is really nothing else that meets your requirements. I think that there are hybrid minivans coming out soon, that might work for the whole more environmentally friendly thing, but storage and fits 7-8 is a minivan or one of the huge SUVs.
