Pre-term labor and bed rest :(

At my OB appointment on Tuesday, I hadn't gained any weight in the last two weeks and was still having some unpleasant symptoms I had Monday (contractions, diarrhea, lower back pain, nausea, and dizziness). I was sent to labor and delivery for the FFN, monitoring, and Rhogam. When they monitored me, I was having regular contractions every 12-15 minutes. Initially the FFN came back negative, but they called back and said it was actually positive, which is bad. It means I have a 30% chance of delivering in the next 3 weeks. I'm only 28 weeks tomorrow, so we really don't want that! I was admitted overnight, put on more anti-contraction meds, and monitored all night. They gave me the steroid shots to help develop the baby's lungs in case she comes early. They also gave me the Rhogam (man, my butt feels like a pin-cushion). They did an ultrasound and my cervix is still long and closed, although slightly shorter than last week. They also discovered that while she is active and has a healthy heartbeat, she does have slightly low amniotic fluid, which I'm really worried about. I was told I need to "drink so much water I'll feel like I'm going to float away." They finally sent me home after the second steroid shot around 9pm last night. I was put on strict bed rest for at least this week, although it will probably last for the next 6 weeks (until I'm 34 weeks).

Oh Kate, that's horrible :( I remember you saying that all was going so well and you were looking forward to going to term!

I hope the contractions can be managed/stopped and that your little girl stays in for a good while longer. Bed rest must be hard to do with the twins around... how are you going to manage it, have you got family there to help?

((hugs))

Thanks for the encouraging words! I am feeling pretty good today. Hardly any contractions! Baby girl hasn’t been very active, which worries me (since she’s usually a mover), but I figure since I’m not that active, she won’t be either.

Andi - It’s great news about my cervix and really that’s the most important part. I’ll go for weekly checks and we’ll discuss what we’ll do based on that length. And yes, I’m still holding onto that 70% not going into labor being in our favor!!

Anna - My mom is here today and tomorrow to take care of the twins while DH works, but she is going to Florida for two weeks starting on Sunday! DH has a 4 day weekend from Sat-Tues, so that will help, but then we’ll have to find people to help starting Wednesday. We may have to end up putting them in a daycare situation that DH can drop them off at on his way to work. It’s not ideal, but we are being very strict with following doctor’s orders since I’m still so early. Once my mom gets back from Florida, she will be able to come help for 3-4 days in a row.

Thanks, Mari and Ruby, for the support and well wishes!

Molly – I’m hoping that I go for my follow-up u/s and appts on Tuesday and they’ll say everything looks perfect again and that I can have some of my activity privileges back. I’m not counting on it, but it’s good to dream, right? The OB didn’t specifically say this strict bedrest is til the baby comes, but I’m trying to prepare myself for the fact that it might be!

Oh Katie, I'm so sorry you're dealing with all of this! I hope that the medications work and the little one stays in there until she's good and ready (and you are too). Sending you tons of positive thoughts.
