Signing with Baby

I was wondering if anyone else is planning on using sign language with their infants? I have several friends who did this with their little ones and they felt it was helpful when their little ones wanted something and it provided a way to communicate.

I don't remember anyone ever mentioning this on here. I do plan on using the basic sign language that an infant would use.

I did some signing with Desmond and have just started with Eloise. We don't do an extensive set of signs, but the 5 to 10 we do use are very useful.

DH actually brought this up a while ago, and he really likes the idea (I do too). So we'll probably try it out when the time comes.

I would love to use some signing with Button when he/she arrives. I took a class earlier this year to help myself communicate with an associate of mine who is deaf. I don't know how extensive we will go but I would love to use some basics.

My mom took a sign language class as her foreign language class credit for her art degree about the time my sister was pregnant with my youngest nephew (which he is 2 and a half now).

I think baby signing is fantastic!! I never knew about it with my 1rst, didn't get around to it with my 2nd, but with my 3rd it was great. Of course the sign she got first was for cookie! Then milk, more & all done. She spoke early & remarkably clearly, but it was good to have those signs until she did. Even just a few signs helps a lot!

I really wish that I had known about it with my first. Simone was a long time learning to speak clearly enough for even me to understand her. We spent so many frustrated hours with her saying something unintelligible, & me saying, "I'm so so sorry, honey, but I just can't understand. Do you want to try again or should I guess?" I think she was almost 3 before we had enough understandable words for her to communicate reliably & even then many people couldn't understand her. We just said she spoke her own special language. :) Sign would have been fantastic for a kid like her.

I was really thinking I would do a lot of signing while I was pregnant with Gideon, but then by the time he was old enough to work with him, we were so busy we didn't push it. We did work with some signs and the daycare he is at did as well. He picked up on several and even now will sometimes still use his signs with his words. I think it helped him learn that there is more than one way to communicate, not just needing to use vocal words.

I actually did post something about this topic a long time ago on the other board (before we were TTC).

Lora - that is all so interesting! Thanks for sharing.

Are there any particular books or resources that you'd recommend, or are they all pretty much along the same lines?

I don't have any recommendations for specific books that are good, but I know there are a bunch out there.
