spilling the beans

While there are probably a dozen or so people who know about my pregnancy, we still haven't 'announced' it to extended family, most friends, and work. People at work are starting to ask me if I am, and I'm bad at lying.

I'm a teacher and need to wait until after Thursday to tell my coworkers, because of Back to School Night. I don't want to deal with the parents hounding me for an hour about my leave. My staff is all women (40-50), and I want to think of a fun way to announce, but am totally drawing a blank! There are typically at least 3 pregnancies a year, and no one has announced yet. Anyone have any thoughts?

It looks like we'll be having an elective scan this weekend (MIL offered to pay for it!) and finding out the gender, so if I wait until Monday, I'll most likely know!

In the past, people have just put a note on the board, or written a cute poem, or brought in pink/blue cupcakes, or just blurted it out at a staff meeting. I'm not very creative, so any thoughts are appreciated! Thanks!

Maybe you could do something having to do with what year your baby would start at your school, like iron on a shirt something that says "Middle-schooler at in year 2019" or whatever.

Please please please be careful with the gender at an early US (before 18 weeks). I've had more than one friend IRL go off this detail only to find out it was wrong.

I wouldn't put much stock in a gender scan at 14 weeks.

Yes. Most places that advertise for 3D/4D "gender" US don't recommend them until 16 weeks, later is better. All of the folds, etc are not fully developed before that and it makes it easy to confuse them.

I understand your excitement in going and having this done, but I'd hate for them to be wrong, and I like I said I know people who have been ill advised about them before.

I had a friend who handed out the Honey Buns...with a note that said something like hi from our new bun in the oven...or something similar.

Aww Emmy I'm so excited that you have gotten to the telling phase--it is so fun when everyone knows and you can talk about it!

I don't have any fun ideas but that is really cool that you will know so soon if it is a boy or a girl! I can't wait to find out!

Definitely let us know how you end up spilling the beans! :-)

Thanks for all of your concern about doing it too early. I do find it interesting, though, that all 3 of the places near me say that they start gender determination at 14 weeks. The place we picked said that they don't guess. If they are not sure, they bring you back at no charge in a couple of weeks. They also guarantee themselves to be right and refund your money if they are wrong. The reason we are not waiting 2 weeks is because my ILs, who offered to pay for it, are going out of the country for almost a month.

Back to the issue at hand-- I'm still looking for fun ways to tell my coworkers, even if they don't involve doing anything pink or blue!
