Too Many Ultrasounds?

So I need some advice.....I had my 3rd Ultrasound today.
Some Background:
1st Ultrasound was at 6 1/2 weeks because I was spotting and we wanted to make sure everything was okay. We paid out the nose for this one, because it was at the hospital and not the clinic.

2nd Ultrasound was at 18W 6D - This was our "20 week" ultrasound and we found out she was girl and but the tech couldn't see her heart, Diaphragm and her lips. Found out I had an Anterior Placenta.

3rd Ultradsound was today at 23W 6D - They could just barely see her heart, but got what they needed, saw her Diaphragm but not her lips.

Okay, so when I met with my midwife she said that they wanted to see her lips. The way she was facing was not conducive to do that. I am assuming its to see if she has a cleft pallet or not. But I was planning on seeing if I could find anything on it on the net today. So when I called DH to tell him that his daughter was uncooperative, he was all pissed off. Why didn't I ask why we needed another one, what purpose will it serve. He said it's not like we will be doing anything anyway....While he has a valid point and I should have asked more questions, I really didn't care. I know (from what I have read) that Ultrasounds are safe for the little one, and that the more I can see her the better. As long as they are "needed" by the doc my insurance is going to cover it. I might call today and just check to make sure and if we don't have it covered then I will cancel it.

But I am sort of pissed off at DH this morning for not asking how she was looking, if she was moving a lot etc....he was more concerned about me not asking the question. It might be because we watched the Business of Being Born last night so he now thinks that my actions are not the same as my words, because I didn't ask a question. I trust my midwife and with that trust I don't feel like for something like this I need to ask...

Thanks for listening.

I'm sorry that he snapped at you like that. My guess is there's something else going on right now that's upsetting him, and it has just translated to being mad at you in that moment.

I'd just explain to him (after he has a chance to calm down - like maybe after he gets home from work) why your doctor wants you to get another u/s, that you didn't find reason for concern at the time (hence not asking more questions), and that it won't cost anything. I'm sure he'll be more on board then. I mean, if your insurance covers it, why not get another peak at the little one?

(((hugs))) Sometimes boys say stupid things ;)

Thanks Ladies, I am sure that's what it is....but will see when he gets home from work. While the U/S are covered, they still cost us like 40.00 bucks - but seriously, that's not that much at all....

We will see what he says...

"My guess is there's something else going on right now that's upsetting him, and it has just translated to being mad at you in that moment."

I agree--or maybe after watching the BOBB he is just defensive about the amount of money the hospital is getting out of this (even if it is the insurance company that gives it to them).

I have already had 3 u/s' and I am only 10 weeks, so maybe if you tell him that it will make him feel better, LOL.

Anyway, I'm with you--it's worth 40 bucks to get a little peek at the baby and see that all is well! We might even break out the big bucks to get a 3D u/s at 12 weeks so we have some cool pics to show our parents on Mother's Day.

Well DH and I talked..I sent him an email - sometimes I get my thoughts out better when I type them up, so I think it helped...He wasn't concerned about the money, or what I thought, but rather the effects the ultrasounds would have on me and the little one and didn't want us to go through unnecessary tests.

So we made a compromise and I told him I would either give him all the information for the nurse line and he could call and ask the nurse or my Midwife what the test was for, or ask in our birthing class this weekend. If after he found out we would talk through it more and decide if I am going to keep the ultrasound or not.

So even though he doesn't agree with me and what I am feeling, at least we had a very very healthy discussion about it. Which I was really proud of us for...a step in the right direction. :)

Thanks Jen, the Ultrasound isn't scheduled until May 21st. The nice part about my MW's office is that she doesn't want me just coming in for an ultrasound, so she schedules them right before her appointments with her....

DH and I talked more after his men's meeting last night and he had more concerns, about what would happen if she was breech, or if something went wrong right away. Our hospital is 30 minutes away. His only experience with Breech was the person on BOBB. So I explained to him that most of the time (from my understanding) breech births aren't emergencies right away at the beginning of labor and that I didn't plan on staying long at home and as soon as we could we would be heading to the hospital.

Luckily we have our birth class on Saturday so he can get a lot of his questions answered.

The problem with that baby (on the BOBB) wasn't that he was breech, it's that he was growth restricted. The reason he came early (and so was breech, hadn't turned yet) was from being growth restricted.

Anyway in the video they hang out at the house for a much longer time than they needed to--I would guess for hours--they had time to get to the hospital, she just wanted to labor at home.

Adrienne - Yep I realize that, and so does DH now...it just brought up the Breech subject and what would happen. I also explained to him and he mentioned it to, it's hard to realize how long they were at home. and I said to him, there is no way (at least for me) that I would be there that long without someone there with us... :)

With higher multiples they get u/s every week. I had a midwife and had 4 u/s and was told they would not do a third trimester one because they didn't do any past the "20 week" u/s. My first was at 10 weeks for dating purposes, my second was an emergency one when 3 people couldn't find the heartbeat, and the last 2 were because I had one at 18 weeks and they couldn't see everything so they asked to see another. The reason they want to know ahead of time is because with these issues they need to have a pediatrician present for the delivery. They obviously don't want to call the ped if everything is fine and have one extra person sitting in on your delivery, so they make sure ahead of time things are fine. If it makes you feel any better I had an X-RAY of my chest while I was about 16 or so weeks pregnant and Jensen turned out perfect, and those DO give radiation straight to the baby.
