Weight loss in first trimester

I know weight loss in the first trimester is not uncommon, but I was just curious who else here lost weight in T1, how much, and, for those of you now further along in your pregnancies, how things went from there in terms of healthy weight gain.

So far, I have lost 5.5 lbs. Vomiting has been infrequent, but I have had a lot of nausea and certainly less appetite. It's not uncommon for me to, for example, only be able to get a few bites of dinner in me, then maybe have a toast and peanut butter before bed. I am trying to compensate by drinking a good amount of juice and milk. I haven't been too concerned, although I was a little disconcerted when I weighed myself today and saw I was 3 lbs lighter than 2 weeks ago. Now, I know my little bean only weighs about an ounce right now, but I'd still feel better if I was just maintaining my weight, rather than losing.

PS I am fairly overweight, which is probably part of the reason I am losing weight so readily...but, I still don't feel great about it.

Hey Cassie,

I did lose a little in the 1T...I think about 6lbs or so. I'll be 18 weeks on Saturday, and right now I'm exactly where I started in August. My doctor only wants me to gain 10-15, since I'm also starting out overweight. I think it's probably just fine!

My cousin also did the same thing...she lost a little in the 1T, didn't gain until after 20w. Her total gain was 32 I think. Her baby was 8lbs. She's 2weeks postpartum now and is only 8lbs away from her starting weight. She's nursing too, so I bet some of that is increased breast tissue.

Yes, it's very common. I didn't lose with my first, but I wasn't over weight at all then. Every other time I have lost weight in the 1T. Usually I lose 7-12 lbs. This time I lost 8 lbs, but gained it back in the 2T. Oddly now my weight has leveled off & I haven't gained any more. I blame my

Cassie,

Given that you are already overweight, I really wouldn't worry about it unless your doc does. Overweight women arent to gain as much weight as normal or underweight women so I'm sure you're just fine. Because some women do lose in the 1T, its more important to monitor weight gain in the 2T and 3T.

I'm also overweight and while I didn't lose any weight, I haven't gained any either. I didnt have the severe MS like you but nothing has really tasted good the last few weeks either so I'm not eating as much either.

Thanks Joelle for my siggy!

I always lose weight in the 1T and I'm not overweight at all. It's very common, epecially if you're not feeling well or have a lot of food aversions. Here's how it went for me:

DD #1 - Lost 8lbs in the beginning, went on to gain a total of 35lbs, delivered a 9lb 5oz baby at 42 weeks.
DD #2 - Lost 5 lbs in the beginning, went on to gain a total of 25lbs, delivered an 8 lb 1 oz baby at just over 40 weeks.
Baby #3 - Lost 3-4 lbs in the beginning, as of 18 weeks I have gained 2 lbs.

So as you can see, I lost quite a bit, especially with my first and went on to have perfectly healthy good sized babies. I usually start gaining at around 14 weeks. I wouldn't worry too much since you haven't lost a ton of weight, I'm sure it will start packing on soon! Then you'll be wishing it wasn't. LOL.

I have heard of lots of women losing weight in the 1T - someone in my expecting club last time lost 20 lbs. She ended up gaining it back to be at the same place later. In my currect EC group, we have a woman who lost 5lbs during the whole pregnancy and didn't gain anything. But she says she is very overweight and her doctor was happy with that.

I'm jealous of you losing weight ppl!

If your doctor isn't worried than you shouldn't worry (I know easier said than done!).

I didn't lose weight in the 1T, but I wanted to say that I don't think its all that uncommon, especially with m/s.
