I've been charting almost a year and there is usually still an element of mystery to it! Like my temp for today, for example. I took it about an hour later than usual, but seems like an awfully big spike for me...and I never O this early. I just try my hardest not to let one temp drive me too bonkers! :)

Yeah...it just seems that we all want to know right NOW, with THIS TEMP. Haven't really considered a microscope. Hope it works for you and isn't just one more thing to drive you crazy! :)

Jenni, I have heard SO many people talk about rubber cement CM. Like, honestly, over 20. So I don't have any answers for you, just wanted you to know you aren't alone, LOL. They should make rubber cement an option on FF, LOL!

"But I was wondering whether actually checking would interfere with the process. I mean things are pretty ph balanced down there, and if the boys are supposed to be able to live there for a couple of days, you don't really want to go messing with their environment...do you?"

My understanding is that our own bodies/hands are less invasive to the vaginal PH/bacteria than the hands of another person. I have even heard of midwives teaching DH's how to check dilation during labor because DH's hands are less likely to cause a reaction/infection in the vagina than another person's hands . . .

With that being said, if my hands or DH's hands are not clean when they ugh . . . get up in there, LOL, I do occasionally get yeast infections. The last time it happened I knew it was because of DH, and since then I have been more stringent about hand washing pre-coitus, and it has helped a lot.

Wow, talk about TMI.

Another more helpful answer to your question is that you don't have to check CM at the cervix, many people just check from the outside (what you see on the TP when you wipe). As long as you are consistent about how you are checking, it doesn't matter if you do internal or external, so do what makes you most comfortable, HTH!

"I'm also finding that my temps are higher in the morning then at most any other time of the day. I don't know if that's normal or if it's just because I sleep under a lot of blankets and am generally pretty warm by the time I wake up in the morning. Do you think that's going to interfere with my temps?"

As long as you take your temp at the same time every day, before you really wake up, get up, move around, talk or do anything, they will be accurate. It always worked really well for me to set my alarm for temping WAY earlier than I would ever get up (like 6 and I don't get up until 8 or 9). Then I would take my temp and go back to sleep. That way I was taking it at the same time every day and I didn't have to worry about accidentally waking up early or something. But I can fall asleep easily so that wouldn't work for people who have trouble going back to sleep.

The reason it might be higher when you first wake up is that during the day you are using your mouth a lot. So basically, every time you take a drink of water, talk, or eat something cold, it is cooling off your mouth.

But your temps look pretty erratic, so I would make sure you are taking it at the same time every day and NEVER getting out of bed, drinking any water, talking, or moving around at all until you take your temp. HTH.

Also, about the FF trial, I don't think it is worth it. I have gotten trial VIP memberships, and it is fun but it certainly doesn't give you a "concieving advantage" if that's what you are worried about. All you need really is something to keep track of your temps, and you get that with the free trial. On the other hand, it isn't really that expensive, and if you enjoy charting and you think it would be fun, go for it. But all the things you need to help your timing are present in the free version, so you absolutely do not need the VIP. HTH!

"I've also ordered one of the saliva microscopes for ferning. I figure my sleep is always kind of bad, so my temps might always be a little wonky...so another bit of information might help."

And here's the explanation! LOL. I've heard good things about the ferning test.

And yeah, about what you were saying before--even if your temps seem hard to understand because of frequent waking, you will still be able to see a pattern when you O. And the pattern becomes more clear the longer you chart. When trying to figure out if people have O'd, for instance, I usually look at their previous chart(s), because people usually have around the same coverline.

So for me, now that I have been charting (on and off) for almost two years, I just know that my temps are around 97 degrees during AF, in the 96's before I O, and well above 97 after I O, and if they hit 98, I'm almost definitely pregnant. It's a little depressing actually, because I pretty much don't need to bother POAS unless my temps are above 98, but I do it anyway because I try to be optimistic, but I know myself too well now. Sigh.

The point being, your own pattern will become increasingly clear the longer you chart.

Jen--

Congrats on the OPK! BD like bunnies! Heheh. I forgot--when did the abdominal pain start? Some people can feel O, so maybe that is what you are feeling? You can always hope! :-)
