Did you chart before TTC?

DH and I are planning to TTC in May (hopefully). It took us 8 months to get pregnant last time and that was with the help of Clomid because I have PCOS. I have two cycles before we are trying but I'm using the FSH test and OPKs this time because I want to get an idea of what we're up against. So far so good and the FSH was fine (which I know was off last time) but haven't gotten a positive OPK yet (on day 12 today). I won't go as far as temping because that is just too much work for me ;) I'm just hoping I get good results on these things when we ARE trying!

I was just wondering if anyone was using OPKs or charting temps before they were even TTC? Or did you just wait until it didn't happen for a few months when you were actually trying?

Well, I discovered WTT because DH and I had TTC for a couple months, and then decided we would wait about six months before trying again. So I started charting the month before we started trying again, and then I ended up being on vacation during O (w/out DH) during the month we were supposed to start--so really I ended up charting for two months before TTCing.

I would definitely recommend charting before, since TTCing can sometimes mess up your normal cycle (since it is a type of stress on your body), so this way you know what is normal before you introduce that additional stress. GL!

I charted before TTC. I have long irregular cycles and charting really helped me to know what was going on and to not think I had O'd when I hadn't. For example the cycle we got pregnant I didn't O until cycle day 41- without temping I would have assumed that I

TTC is stressful and probably the reason I wasn't ovulating last time. This time, since we have one child of each gender and we have a much more laid back attitude about conceiving, I'm hoping that will help my body do what it's supposed to do.

This is the first cycle I've used the FSH test and OPKs. I'm really irregular too so I will be relying on regular BDing and a positive OPK. I'm encouraged by what I see so far and I'm sure I felt ovulation pain the last few cycles I had.

That's exactly how I view it: having control. I got really frustrated that we were trying so hard and I wasn't ovulating. It's like, what's the point? We don't DTD every other night normally so why put out so much effort "just for fun"? lol. I know DH would probably disagree, but I feel like some of DTD is "just business" come May and I want to know that it'll pay off.

BUT... I may have a hard time not asking DH to DTD unprotected this month if I get a positive OPK. I would be really mad at myself if I knew I ovulated this month and not when we were TTC so we missed our chance...

I actually started charting about a year before we started to TTC. I had been on birth control for about 15 years, so I really wanted to get my hormones straightened out, and a good idea of my cycles, before we started.

It took me about a month before temping in the morning wasn't a pain, but now it's totally second nature. I also started charting my cervical fluid a couple months after I started temping, and those two things combined really help me pin down my O date.

I'd highly suggest charting to anyone - TTC or not :) It's a wonderful way to get in tune with your body and your cycle. Plus, like Ash said, it helps take the mistiming out of the equation, which is a huge thing when it comes to TTC.

Good luck!

I charted for three months before TTC'ing it really helped me get in tune with my cycles and used OPK's for awhile. When we did start trying I had figured out my approximate ovulation dates and ovulation signs which made it nice!

You're both right, Jennifer and Alyssa. It is nice to be in tune with your body. I think that's the biggest thing with me. I just want to know if having another baby is even a possibility. We are not going to do Clomid again, so it would be nice to know if I ovulate on my own.

Hi Kate,

First of all, I just have to say that your LO's are adorable! How old are they??

I went off BCP and charted for 5 cycles before TTC. I actually got PG the first cycle we were NPP so that made TTC much less stressful, LOL! I temped and checked my CF/CM in my underwear (not internally) and really felt in-tune with my body. DH was more annoyed with my alarm going off to temp every morning than I was but it was so cool to see from my temps the cycle I got PG that I was PG before I even took a HPT.

I used fertilityfriend.com (the free version) and found it very easy to use. The online availability let me update my info from home or work, which was very convenient. I would also recommend reading 'Taking Charge of Your Fertility' by Toni Weschler, if you haven't already done so.

I'm currently trying to decide what to do for BC now that our DD is here. I don't really want to go back on BCP because I like the idea of being hormone-free but I don't know if I trust FAM right now since I'm not exactly sleeping regular with a newborn. DH and I are open to more children but not just yet.

GL!

I'm hoping to start TTC again this spring or summer, and I'm charting. Since James doesn't always wake up at the same time it's hard for me to be very consistent, but I do a good enough job to get a general idea of when I ovulate so I'll know approximately when to expect AF. Also, we use FAM for birth control.

If I were you I would chart your temps as well as doing the OPK's. I always had terrible luck with OPK's and did not find them to be very helpful in accurately predicting O. Good luck with everything!

I started charting before and then while TTC and I was so stressed out that I didn't do anything the month I concieved. However when I was 2 days late I decided to temp and it was way up there so I took a test and I was pregnant. I think it depends on individual.
