I got my test results and took them to "Dr. Uncle". My Estrogen was a little low, but the major surprise was that I got really wonky results for thyroid antibodies... So apparently I have Hashimotos's thyroiditis... I have a huge family history of hypothyroidism, and I can't believe that all my life they've tested TSH, T3 and T4, and no one thought about those antibodies until now. So now I'm on a progressive dose of Levotiroxin, and I need to get more tests done. On the "bright side" this could explain my menstrual irregularities instead of the supposed PCOS that never quite fitted the pattern.

Right after posting the last, I thought of calling my sister. For those who don't know she's a doctor and is soon about to start the residence in endocrinology, so I thought it would be nice to have her reassurance on this. She sounded worried about the diagnosis, and asked me to read the results over the phone. She thinks the thyroid levels don't really match "Hashimoto's T", and was worried about taking Levotiroxin about this. Of course being my sister, she lectured me about going to "Dr. Uncle", since if it turns out I'm not happy about this whole thing, I don't have an easy way out (that is without hurting his feelings). I could argue that she was my sister and I was consulting her, but whatever... She then suggested to get a second opinion with a well known endocrinologist, to see what he thinks about this. It sounds like the smart thing to do, right?? BUT if the endocrinologist disagrees with Dr. Uncle about this... What will I do?? Of course I would have to do what's best for my body, but how do I manage the situation??? I could lie and say I'm taking the meds... but if he ever finds out, it could be catastrophic!!!! SH*T!!! What will I do now????

Sorry about the health issues Mari! I would get a second opinion for sure and I dont think you should worry about your uncle's feelings on this one. I'm sure that if he is a reasonable professional (and a caring uncle), he will realize that you are doing what is in your best interests for your health. Good luck!

Mari, sorry to hear all this, but I guess it's good you are getting to the bottom of it.

I would get a second opinion. You would do it if it wasn't family so he should understand. You have to do what is best for you and your body. Good luck!!
