Hey Amber, I just saw this post, so sorry for taking so long to respond. My DH had low morphology and low motility. He made many changes and 3 months later had a SA that was on the low end of normal, but still normal.

The vitamins and supplements he takes are L-carnitine (500mg), acetyl l-carnitine (500mg), Vitamins E (400IU), B12 (1000mcg) and C (1000mg), Zinc (30mg), Selenium (200mcg), and Copper caps. He said the zinc is most important for morphology and you are supposed to take the copper with the zinc.

He also cut out caffeine. He never smoked, chewed tobacco, or rode bikes. He still drinks occasionally, but not much, especially since I drink a lot less too (and none in the 2ww).

As for underwear, he refused to go all the way to boxers, but switched to boxer briefs, which are supposed to be in between boxers and briefs. This was a point of contention for us, but since he had better numbers, I let it go.

It does take 90 days for sperm to mature, so any changes made now would result in improved SA in 90 days. If your DH had an infection when he had the SA, then that could artificially depress numbers. Usually if you have a low SA, they recommend another test in a few weeks to confirm. You wait a few weeks so the infection can go away but don't necessarily have to wait the whole 90 days to see if all the changes worked. But DH didn't like getting a SA, so he just made the changes and wanted to wait the 90 days for another test.

Amber--

I think it is great that your DH is motivated to stop chewing tobacco and getting in better shape. I think it could make a HUGE difference in his sperm quality, but I think it takes about three months to start seeing a difference (which I'm sure you already know). I know when Missy's DH started taking vitamins and changing a few of his habits, his numbers changed a LOT.

Will they do a repeat SA? Sometimes a sample can be, well, not a very good sample! And another sample could come out very different, even if it is taken only a few days later.

Either way, I think the benefits of DH quitting tobacco and getting more exercise is probably worth what you are going through. I think if he can stick with these changes, you will definitely have a shot (maybe a good shot) of conceiving naturally. Don't lose hope in the human body's ability to heal itself--it is very remarkable.

Here is an article I found: http://www.fertilityneighborhood.com/content/in_the_news/archive_1277.aspx

It talks specifically about how chewing tobacco regularly has a very negative effect on morphology. Maybe if you show DH this study, he will be motivated to quit? I really think that might be your whole problem, and if you fix it, you could totally get PG on your own.

Adrienne – Yes I’m definitely glad that we did this somewhat early.

Cortney – They used the WHO method for the morphology, so it’s not the strict method.

Ashley – Yes his numbers could definitely be worse, but when the range for count is 20-250ml, I feel like we’re definitely at the low end with 30ml.

Amber--

I agree with Ash and Cort. Firstly, it's not too bad. Secondly, there are lots of different vitamins and supplements you can take to help improve the quality of semen.

It's good you know about it though, so your DH can start taking stuff and maybe changing some habits--maybe that will help you get PG.

Amber, I wouldn't let those numbers get you down too much. Hopefully the doctor can explain more to you. Do you know if they used the stricter Kruger criteria for morphology? When they use the stricter criteria, a normal morphology of 10% isn't too far off the normal mark of 14%. It is definitely still considered fertile. My DH's SA came back with a normal morphology of 10% with the stricter criteria and the RE said we can definitely still get pg, but IUI might be needed. Of course, my DH's other numbers were a bit lower, if I remember correctly.

If the red blood cells are due to an infection, that can easily be treated with antibiotics. Could the lower viscosity be due to dehydration or too much caffeine or something? The volume and overall count are decent, so don't get too discouraged yet! You will get pg!

I did some google research so don't trust anything I say- BUT it looks like some things are good.

A normal count seems to be between 20 and 40 million
