12yo Missing in CO

Have any of you seen this story on this 12 yo missing in CO. I just saw it on the Today Show this morning.

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-20001549-504083.html

I really hope they find her soon and alive...She left her home to go to a birthday party and her parents (mom & Step dad) haven't seen her since. What they don't say in any article I can find, but that the step dad said on the news story this morning is this 12 yo had a 17 yo boyfriend. Now I understand I am not a parent quite yet, but I just can't believe that these parents would let their 12yo be with a 17yo like that. I don't know the specifics or anything, but seriously. Even if the 17yo is really immature and the 12yo is really mature that's still too big of a difference at that age.

Now a best friend of mine was 15 and with a 23 year old and when she was 17 she moved in her with her now husband. DH brought that up when I was going off about this this morning, but it worked out for them and I don't agree with it. Now my friend is really mature, and her life wasn't the best, so maybe that's whats going on here, but still. It just seems wrong to me!!! I just had to vent about this. thanks for listening.

That's awful, I hope they find her real soon. IMO, why does a 12 yo have a boyfriend, period? At that age, she should have friends that are boys, and that's it.

Julie - that's exactly what I was thinking...When I was 12 I wasn't concerned about boys at all...I mean I had crushes on them, but if I did have a boyfriend all we did was talk to each other and we were more friends than anything.

I just really hope they find her and that she went off on her own or with the boyfriend or something and nothing bad happens to her.

Yeah I agree--a 12 YO should not have a 17 YO BF. Though after working in a MS I know better than to say they shouldn't have a BF at all, but at that age it is a little different--mostly just hanging out together at school, holding hands, and maybe after a few weeks or months, the occasional kiss . . . group dates, etc.

Of course some of them are having sex but I am talking more about the "kind of boyfriend" that I would be okay with my 12 YO having.

Anyway, when I was 16 I went out with a 24 YO--but I of course lied to my parents and said we were only friends, but they sort of knew better but couldn't do anything about it. But if my 16 YO wanted to date someone in their 20's, I would absolutely not allow it. 19, maybe--I think in your teenage years a 3 year gap is about as big as you should have--15 w/ and 18 YO, 14 w/ a 17 YO--which means I might let my 12 YO date a 15 YO--but even then I don't like that my kid is in MS and their BF or GF is in HS.
