Airline charging fee for carry on bags?

Did you hear about the airline that is going to start charging passengers for bags they carry on that don't fit under their seat?

Thank you for the sig Mary
I have always traveled with a carry-on and no checked luggage. It makes it easier to not have to wait at the carousels for you bags and they don't get lost because you always have it with you. Most of my trips are short enough to only need a little rolling suitcase. It saves me time and money and now they are taking away that little money saver as well.
I can see the argument that the cabin is getting filled up from oversized bags that would normally be checked, but I don't think it's fair for airlines to charge fees for absolutely everything. What's next? Pay a fee for the infant you have traveling on your lap? Pay a fee for your less than 2 pound purse? You have a heavy coat, that requires it's own seat. Ugh.
This particular air travel company has very few planes and if I remember correctly provides very low fees but charges for pretty much everything else you might want or need.
I see where they are coming from. Since checking a bag now costs

I wonder if they are going to start charging extra fees for heavier passengers? I know they are already trying to get overweight ppl to pay for 2 seats...
But last time I was on a plan, I only had my baby bag with me as carry on and I could NOT find anywhere to put it in the overhead. The thing was absolutely jammed packed with FULL sized suitcases. It was ridiculous. There was a guy sitting the aisle across from us who had two suitcases and a laptop. He had jumped the queue and boarded the plane before our rows were called so he had already filled his overhead and ours.
We had a baby bag & our laptop for two ppl and still they both had to be packed under us. I prefer to put my jacket under my seat but there was no room w/baby bag there :(
SO I think j-a should pay more than my DH & I considering how much more service he is using than us...?

I don't know what I feel is more outrageous about this scheme. One, this "problem" of people stuffing too many things into a carry on is a direct result of airlines charging for checked bags. The simple solution to this "problem": don't charge for checked bags!
Of course, then they have to admit that squeezing more stuff into the carry-on has meant huge financial gains for airlines as they put in non-passenger cargo instead of bags.
Or maybe it is worse that the whole perception that luggage is some "optional" part of air travel or just a convenience that we should be expected to pay for. The simple truth is, if you are traveling you need to bring luggage somehow. What I hate most is airlines trying to hide behind deceptively low fares and then hit you with all these "optional" fees when you actually try to board the plane!
