What did everyone do for the holidays?

My sisters picked up me and the baby on Thursday morning, and we headed to my parents house.

DH had to work on Christmas Eve and I really wanted to get to mass this year since I didn't go last year due to my hospitalization for PTL. So Selin and I went to a Children's mass at 2pm and she was an angel the entire time. We sat in an auxiliary room with a big screen because the church was already packed when we got there. It helped that there were a ton of other kids in the room because it kept her entertained and drowned her out when she decided to talk really loud during quiet parts of mass. :-)

Christmas day we went to my parents' house for lunch. It was just us and my stepdad's two sisters. My mom went way overboard on stuff for Selin even though I told her not to. Then we headed to my inlaws for dinner. Both of DH's siblings were there but his sister left the baby home with her DH because he was having a fussy day (the baby, not her DH, LOL!)

I had one client (4 cats) to care for Christmas Eve through the day after and I'm full-blown sick again so physically I was not feeling my best this Christmas. I didn't even bother to put makeup on, that's how crappy I felt. Thankfully I have a light work load this week (only 2 clients/day) so I hope to rest as much as one can with a 10 mo old!

My dad drove to Indianapolis on Friday and we went to 3:30pm Mass on Christmas Eve. Then we went out to dinner to the Weber Grill Resturant. David ate great and I couldn't believe his little belly could hold so much food. He got a kids meal and had a grilled cheese, some broccoli, some fruit, tater tots and ice cream. I split the ice cream with him as I was super stuffed.

Christmas Day we opened presents after my dad got up and then we had lunch around 2:00. We had ham, cheesy potatoes, green beans and rolls.

David got some nice gifts. He got a basketball hoop which he will be able to use until he's 5, got some match box cars which he will have to wait a little while to play with, a gift card to Carter's from my dad, Chuck the truck from my brother which he loves and a piano entertainment thing from my in laws and some clothes. Can't remember what it is called. I got a new scanner and some clothes and we got some restaurant gift cards. Some of them we will take David others we will hire a sitter. He is actaully really good at restaurants.

Hope you all had a great Christmas.

Thanks Carly! I'm feeling better today, guess the antibiotic is finally working! Just reading about your trip home left me exhausted so I can only imagine how you must've felt! I'm sure your inlaws cherished their time with you and Tad, more than you may realize.

I'm flying solo with Selin next month to FL to visit my BFF and I'm getting nervous. We have a layover as well (in PHL actually!) because I'm flying on FF miles so we couldn't fly direct. We're taking early morning flights both ways but I'm worried about how she's going to be on the plane and hauling her and all our stuff through all the airports.

Do you know if there's a restriction on what size stroller you can check at the gate? I only have one, a travel system size, but I noticed you brought an umbrella one so I was just wondering.

I had to work on Christmas Eve morning, but DH took Teddy to nursery and picked him up (rather than me) so it felt much shorter. We then packed our bags and got the last of the presents wrapped (and cards written) and set off to my MIL's at about 4pm. DH and I normally watch "Little Lord Fauntleroy" on Christmas Eve, but I couldn't find the DVD! I emptied our whole DVD shelf (seriously, we've probably got 200+ DVDs) but still didn't find it and got very upset as this is our Christmas tradition and I was looking forward to taking this with us, as we couldn't spend the day at home.

Anyway, we got to MIL's and "set up camp" as I like to call it - there's just so much stuff you have to take, even for a few days! I gave Teddy some dinner and put him to bed, then cooked pumpkin soup for everyone. We had dinner and basically just a quiet night and went to bed early.

On Christmas day morning, Teddy woke up first (what a surprise) and DH lit the fire in the livingroom, so it was nice and cosy when we took all the presents in. Teddy opened his first and was delighted with everything he got; then DH and I gave each other pressies. It was really nice to have that bit of "family time" before everyone else woke up. After that it started to get hectic - my older BIL and his girlfriend arrived, MIL and younger BIL got up, MIL started stressing about Christmas lunch etc... so the rest of the day was pretty much a blur, it was nice in the evening when we played games, but also lots of hard work. We stayed Boxing Day and went home in the afternoon of the 27th. By that point even DH had had enough.

I know my MIL is in a very bad place right now but she tried her hardest to make life difficult for everyone, let her mood out on people by shouting and guilt-tripping simultaneously. It was so bad that whenever she entered a room ,the mood automatically changed and just got uncomfortable.

DH very nearly fell out with her and got really p*ssed off with her; so it was nice to be home and finally be able to relax!

On Tuesday we met up with friends for lunch, which was really nice too and Teddy and Lucy had a great time pulling faces at each other and playing games with the place mats ;)

i brought an umbrella stroller this time, but last time i took my quinny, which isn't any smaller than the travel system stroller when you collapse it. plus, even though i had the umbrella stroller, i still gate-checked the convertible car seat, which is pretty sizable. (since i had a layover, if they lost my luggage i didn't want to risk being stuck without the car seat, so i carried it with me and gate-checked it...i rigged up the latch strap on the bag to sling it over my shoulder. such a pain, but worth it i think.)

i flew delta because that's the cheapest option out of my local airport, and they let you gate-check your baby items for free.

I did a good deal of traveling alone w/ DS when he was a toddler (from MA to TX) and I got this thing called a "Ride-On Carry-On", it was fantastic.

That's a great idea, Kate! And I like the photo on their website of the happy couple walking down the jetway with the kids. Ah if only air travel were that easy. :-)

Carly - Thanks for the info. I'm flying with US Airways and they allow you to gate check one item for free. My friend has a car seat and PNP I can borrow so thank god I don't have to lug that stuff too. Also, you might want to see if there's a baby gear rental company in your folks area. We used one when we flew to Halifax and I was going to use one for the FL trip but then my friend was able to get the gear from a friend of hers. I'm still debating whether to check my luggage or carry on. I don't want to lose my stuff but at the same time, I already have enough to carry.

Sorry Adrienne for hijacking this thread with my travel questions! :-)
