I am a great organizer when it comes to school/profession, but I really struggle with our home.

I'm interested!! I *can* be organized if I want to, the problem is to keep things that way... I usually get in an organizing frenzy once a month or so, and then relax and let life take over... which of course means that after a few days everything is a disaster again!

One thing I do which I find really helps is reduce clutter by getting rid of papers/mail right away and by not buying knick nacks.

When you keep your counters and tables clear of stuff everything always looks much better and it is much easier to keep things clean.

I agree about keeping surfaces clear of clutter and knick knacks.

OMG I need this thread. Sometimes I really hate having ADD. :(

Erica, what are your problem areas/gear?

I'm all for designated junk baskets/containers, one per room, and committing to sorting through them once a week. Less daunting than trying to stay organized every.single.day.

And coffee tables with built-in hollow lids are a godsend. :P

Thanks for the responses so far! Good ideas.

Great question, Adrienne. My problem areas...#1 is definitely PAPER. We have tried lots of different systems, but we continue to have trouble with important papers that need attention and school papers. DH wants to put papers that need to be signed or mailed or remembered for some reason out where they are visible. Then when I want to clean up, he gets mad because I "hide" them away. No, I'm just cleaning up!

Erica, important papers that need to be delt with and then mailed out or taken we put on the back of the front door. I have a magnets and then a magnetic clip. So if I have bills we hang them on the door so I will see them when I go out so I remember to take them with me. Just an idea!

Erica,

I was just on your blog earlier tonight and was planning to come over here to ask if there had been any progress on your house hunt? Did you get that house you posted pictures of?

As for organizing, my DH and I are both very organized people so our house is pretty tidy most of the time, just not white-glove clean, lol.

We also live in a small 2BR house with very few closets so I am constantly Freecycling, selling things on Craigslist, or donating items to charity. I keep a big garbage bag in the floor of my closet and as I find stuff I no longer wear, I toss it in the bag so it's ready to be donated. I had a full bag sitting in my closet for months because I just don't have the time to get to the Goodwill store when a postcard came in the mail for one of those veterans organizations that picks up your stuff at the curb. So I confirmed our pickup time and out to the curb the bag went! It felt SO good to finally get it out of my closet!

Like Ash, we also read mail the same day and quickly purge the junk. We recycle what we can and reuse paper that has no writing on one side.

Thanks for the great responses! I love all the information and ideas.

Christine, we did get the house, but we are waiting on a closing date! I'm still hoping we might close before Thanksgiving. Thanks for reading my blog :)

Katja, I do have the "I'll do it later" problem. For sure! Especially since I almost always have Charlotte in my arms, and even putting the peanut butter away feels like a huge chore.

I'm feeling motivated!!!!
