So upset - insurance dilemma :-(

DH and I are really in a bind right now, insurance-wise. We still have insurance, so no worries there.

A little background: We bought our own insurance through an agent when I quit my FT job in August and at that time, we (well moreso DH) opted not to elect the optional maternity coverage because it was more money. At that time, we knew there was a one year waiting period from the time we

Ugh, Christine! That totally sucks!! I don't know what I'd do -- probably figure out the option where the benifits would start the earliest (as long as it wasn't too much more $$$). At least with the two options you mentioned, you'd only have to delay TTC for a few months, not a whole year like if you kept your current insurance. I don't think I'd bank on getting a new job/insurance if you're super keen on TTCing sooner rather than later.

Sorry you're dealing with this. Hopefully you'll get better advice from the other Americans on the board, and you'll figure something out.

So so sorry for you! Like Alyssa, I'd probably opt for the quickest way (if it's not too much more money) or alternatively for the second option you mentioned (which would delay your TTC plans only by half a year). I can so understand your frustration though - as you might remember I had to wait longer than anticipated too, but that was because of DH rather than other circumstances.

Maybe the other Americans will chip in with more ideas - to be fair this whole insurance system you have goes a little over my head! Wasn't there talk about a health care reform in the US? (Forgive me for being so ignorant when it comes to foreign politics). I can only hope this would be modelled closer to the Canadian/European systems.

Christine -

That is crazy that you can't add maternity coverage until next year!

Ick, craziness! I HATE insurance! Ours is so terrible it's like having none at all :(.

I'm with the camp that thinks you should opt for the plan that gets you coverage the soonest. Insurance crap should not interfere with your family planning (although I know it does for many of us)!
