Soccer fans?? Anyone??
Tomorrow starts the football world cup, and my whole country has turned upside down, as I'm sure Brazil, Germany, England and a few others...
If you want to make any comments about it... This is the thread!

Hey Mari! We're pretty excited for it in our household, but it's not super popular in Canada in general (it doesn't help that we suck at it and don't have a team playing in the tournament!). We will be cheering for England though :)

"Goooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllll !!!!!!"

My DH (not american) took TWO WEEKS of vacation time from work just to be at home and watch games... when he told me he did that, I just looked at him, thinking uh, might we want to be saving up vacation time for things like possible dr. appts or something down the road... darling dear husband??? Oh, but the man loves his soccer!! ;o)

Not many people are so into it here though. Us Americans, we don't even call the sport the proper name ("futbol") !!! :p

Germans are going insane, as usual LOL. Both DH and I don't like football/soccer but the world cup can be fun, it is just the whole country really goes mad and it lasts a month!

I'm interested to see how Germany does this year considering so many players are out due to injuries.

Andi- That is so cute and funny about your DH!

Mari, I was actually thinking today that you'd probably be the only one here that will follow the World Cup, given that Americans aren't much into football! :-) Great idea to open this thread!

Ash, of course I'd forgotten you'e in Germany so they'll probably go football crazy too (even if your DH doesn't!). I agree the World Cup is a lot more fun than regular premiere league games.

Alyssa - yay for cheering for England!! ;-)

I have bought football T-Shirts for both Teddy and me and we're wearing them today :-) I'll have to get someone take a picture of us. DH is not much into football and thinks it's a bit chavvy to get England T shirts, but so what! I'm really looking forward to the World Cup and will try to watch all the England matches. I hope we make it far this year, it's been a while (1966!!) but such bad luck that our captain can't play.

Yay girls!! I thought I was the only one interested!!
Tomorrow is our first match (Arg vs. Nigeria), so we'll see how it goes!
I wish Germany and England a ton of luck... that is until we meet!! ;)

Mari-

I'm not much of a sports fan in general but DH is OBSESSED with soccer (er, I mean, REAL football). He decided to get wireless modem on his phone service for this month just so he can watch the world cup at work (he works at a gas station so most of his spare time is spent watching movies on his laptop, but no internet). And the team he is rooting for: Argentina!!! Ok ok and U.S. too....depending on who they're playing.... ;)

Oh and why does the world cup sound like a huge swarm of bees? Do the football fans all have little buzzers in the stands or something? It's even getting on DH's nerves and he's not easily irritated

Oh, I am so bummed!! How COULD he let that one in? Oh well a draw's better than losing, right? ;-)

Ruth, that annoying noise is made by the fans' vuvuzelas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vuvuzela). I think they tried to ban them before the tournaments started but just couldn't do it as the SA fans love them so much. I cannot imagine what it must sound like to actually be in the stadium; your ears would probably fall off!
