Who is responsible for what is in the kids pockets?


I have asked one particular family to frisk their son BEFORE he comes in and empty out his pockets. He collects the most choking hazards I have ever seen. I have pulled out....money, marbles, superballs, A LIGHTER, and most dangerous... prescription pain killers.

So now when he comes in I make him empty out his pockets. Today I confiscated some tiny round erasers, two superballs and three nickles. He cries, him Mom cajoles, and I get madder each day. I do NOT want to be the bad guy. Why can't they check him before he gets out of the car? I don't mind if he brings in something large enough that the babies won't choke, as long as it wont burn my house down or send someone into a coma. Is this too much to ask?

I posted this on the debate board too. It's really dead over there.

I have one of those! Jessica. She also confiscated stuff going home.....one day she even had my CELL PHONE in her pocket! get a trash can and keep it right by the entrance. When he comes, empty pockets right into the trash can. Sends a clear message and you don't have to look mean and ugly (LOL) I do that with Jessica because she always brings food......and I HATE that! I have posted a sign asking that no toys, food, etc. be brought. At first it kind of bothered mom, but I told her kindly that rules are rules and if she wants me to be the heavy.......that's what I'll be. I figure that if mom knows what will happen and she CHOOSES to bring kid stocked full......her fault! When Jessica goes home, we also comb the pockets and if she took anything she shouldn't I give the stealing lecture, tell mom to reinforce at home, and then send her away......empty pocketed! hassle but doo able. good luck.

I agree w/ you. How annoying. I think the parent is responsible, BUT - since you know about it so are you. Send home a nice note to ALL the parents. Explain that you have little ones and that NO items/toys from home may be brought. If the items brought present a choking hazard they will be taken and held until the end of the week or not returned. Let the mom deal w/ little johnny's crying for when you take his stuff.

OR you could ask mom to search and sezure him before she leaves and take the contents w/ her. Don't let her off the hook if you go this route. It would be good practice for getting ready for kindergarten.

I used to have the same thing w/ sippy cups. If I wash them and keep track of them they become mine. AFter a cup or two they stop bringing them! (I did tell them before hand not to bring them).

I would do the frisking each morning just as you have been doing,or you could install one of those anti theft alarms like they have in the stores :o).Isnt it amazing !?!? He could flip out all he wants Mom too for that matter those other kids safety is your responsibilty.You have to be the bad guy/girl at times Ohhhhhh well.

What the heck is this mom's problem? I was shocked that he had her prescription painkillers the last time but the fact that she still won't check him? She's asking for big problems. I would insist mom empty his pockets in the morning and take anything in them with her. It's definitely something SHE needs to get a grip on before CPS responds to a comatose child. Some people........

its the parents responsiblity but since they don't have to deal with the repercussions....

Have you talked the mom about maybe making it part of the 'good-bye'? How old is the boy? For some reason I thought he was 3 or so. Maybe the mom could say something like "a hug, a kiss and a quick checkeroo" and tell him she will hold his treasures till she comes to get him.

Well, I feel if the parent's are not going to take responsibity for their child's pockets than you have every right to check his pockets when he arrives. After all it's your home and your responsibity to be sure those babies do not have anything around to choke on. I would probably just kind of tickle him and say .."let's check those pockets" and explain to the parent why it is very hazardous to have choking pieces around due to the babies.
