Hello!
My name is Elizabeth, I’m 32 and have been working from home for about 9 years now. I have a great kid; he’s 9, a DH of 10 years, and two dogs. I just found out we are expecting in April!
I am an artist, I work mostly in oils, some mixed medium, and plaster. I show in 4-6 gallery shows a year, I was hoping to expand this year, but I think I’ll hold off till 2008 now. This year I starting learning about silversmith work, and hope to launch a line of jewelry sometime in 2007. For extra income I also paint murals, mostly for businesses.
I love my work, the past 2-3 years I have really become more accomplished, and that FEELS GREAT.
I am a bit nervous about how a new baby will impact things. Not to mention, we will be moving soon, which means I’ll have to set up a whole new studio. I was thinking about taking a year off to get settled in, then when baby is 6 months set up a part time, maybe 10 hours a week sitting. It would be with family members so I guess that would be ok. But then there is the lost of income, even if I just cut out gallery shows, that will be a HUGE loss. Not sure what to do. Good thing I have some time to figure it out. I’d LOVE to hear how other “new baby” moms are doing it.
I look forward to getting to know all of you.
Thanks for reading about me (and my issues..lol)

Congratulations on your pregnancy! It definitely does compound things with a home business having a baby around, not to mention that you're moving in the middle of it all!! I have a friend who paints murals as her business, and she has a 1 year old baby girl. She has been able to keep up her pace by just bringing her daughter with her when she was younger, and working around her husband's schedule now that her baby is older and mobile. I think you just have to be realistic about how much time you're going to be able to dedicate to your business, and don't stress yourself out too much if you don't get as much work done in the beginning as you used to. I didn't start my home business until after I was home with my 2nd and he was 1.5, and my schedule works around my DH's schedule so he can watch them while I do shows (I'm a Pampered Chef consultant), but that's why it works well for me at this point in my life. I think the sitter idea is a good one, and setting realistic goals for what you will be able to do during those first six months will be another good step. Hang in there and keep us posted on how you're doing!

I sure feel for you - my story is similar in some ways.

I sell Usborne books and work home shows as well as with schools and libraries. I have three kids 7, 19 months and 8 weeks. We also just moved 1 month before the newest baby arrived. I ended up putting everything on hold and didn't have a single sale from May through until the end of August. I just couldn't do it. It did hurt a bit financially (and I'm still just revving back up so income is still down) but honestly I was completely exhausted from the stress of moving, while 8-9 months pregnant, we were (still are to a point) living in and out of boxes for weeks (months...) so I just played it by ear.

I'm trying to create a 'schedule' for myself to try and stick to as well as I can between school drop offs and pick ups, breastfeeding, Barney and Wiggles videos, piano lessons, etc. And I want my schedule to include time for meetings with schools and libraries, planning and prepping home shows and booth events, exercise to get rid of baby body, and more. I'm not sure how I'm going to do it - that's what I'm going to work on this week.

Sorry I don't have any answers - but at least you're not alone :-)
