My son, 16, finally found a job (hooray!) and has worked the past three weekends, washing dishes at the restaurant at a small airport. He got his first check Saturday night - $91. I have already talked to him about putting at least some of it into savings, in case he wants to drive some day (to help with insurance and gas) as well as to pay for summer school which is looking more and more like a reality. Well, I guess the check was burning a hole in his pocket, because yesterday he went and cashed it (at the grocery store, probably for a fee) and then to the mall. All he bought at the mall was a poster, but it's spring break this week and I'm sure with all the free time, he's going to go other places and spend more of it...

If your kid has a job, do you require him/her to save any of it, or put it in the offering at church? I'm not sure whether I should make it a rule or just let him do his thing and figure out what to do when he has to have some money. He has lots of band equipment he could sell if he had to. He just took a personal finance class at school so he knows about saving and interest, but hey, he's a teenager :-D
