My little guy Cam is having surgery on Thursday and we had to get a clearance from his pediatrician on Monday. (Long story short he has a cracked molar that abscessed and he wound up in the hospital for iv antibiotics. That tooth and the four front teeth he cracked as an infant are being removed, but since he's only two he will be under general anesthesia with an oral surgeon.) Among the questions was asking if he had a history of bleeding. I answered that we didn't know as he's never been badly cut so we have no way to know. His ped then asked if he had been circumcised, presumably to assess his history of bleeding. I explained that Cam is intact, and the ped noted on the surgical release that bleeding risk is unknown.

Here's why I'm posting this up here: My son is over 2, yet with his brief health history his ped still felt the need to note his unknown bleeding risk. Yet, we routinely cause massive damage to newborn penii without so much as a fleeting thought to their history, or really lack there of. It even made my mom, Jewish as can be, stop and question what we're really doing when it comes to circ. Do people not think about this, or do they just believe it's so not a big deal and they can't be bothered to worry about things like bleeding and complications?
