We're having such a hard time knowing how to proceed with DS. I would really appreciate your thoughts and input.
DS missed the cut off for admission to kindy by one day. We had every indication he was beyond ready to enter school at the age of 4. Part of the decision making process included social, behavioral, and IQ testing. In short, DS tested as clearly gifted. Everyone involved supported DS"s admission. DS is now 6.5 years old and in first grade. From day one of kindy he's been labeled as excels academically and immature - he's super impulsive and lacks focus. Neither DH/I or DS's teachers believe he has a learning disability or an attention disorder but we opted to have DS tested for ADD/ADHD to rule it out. Testing showed him as ADHD with hyperactivity and impulsivity. With 4 weeks left in the school year we opted to try meds - he was put on 18 mg of Concerta. We gave the meds to him today to watch for side effects and it was awful. He bounced off the walls and didn't stop talking or moving for nearly 11 hours. He willingly did 150 pages of math homework, ran 100 laps around our 1/2 acre property, and did 200 crunches to work off some of the energy - there was no stopping him.
Our ped is suggesting we try a medication in another family. Is it possible to have ADHD and react so poorly to a medication? I guess we wonder if he even has ADHD. Could he be just be gifted and immature? Could holding him back help by putting him in a class with other kids his age? Can a piece of paper actually tell us he has ADHD when no one really sees it? How do we really know he has it? If it helps his Vanderbilt scores were parents 32 and teacher 39.
The school supports promoting DS but we're tired of hearing he needs redirected multiple times through the day. We just don't want him to struggle and really don't know what to do.
