NASHVILLE - The Senate approved, 19-11, a modified version of Sen. Stacey Campfield's bill to block teaching about homosexuality in kindergarten through eighth grade.
While the previous version stated "no public elementary or middle school shall provide any instruction or material that discusses sexual orientation other than heterosexuality.", the modified version declares that "any instruction or materials made available or provided at or to a public elementary or middle school shall be limited exclusively to natural human reproduction science."
Sen. Andy Berke says "This is an amendment solving a political problem rather than a real problem," since current Tennessee law already prohibits discussion of sexuality in elementary and middle schools unless through use of the approved "family life curriculum", which does not cover homosexuality.
