I am very upset. I was talking with my brother yesterday, who is also a nurse, but work's with adults, and he was talking about a patient who was pregnant, but being treated for something else, and he said that steroids can cause a cleft lip and cleft palate in a fetus and can cause stillbirth! I was dumbfounded. I have been on steroids during all three of my pregnancies due to having a flare of my chronic GI disease! My GI doctor said that they were safer than not having my disease controlled, and my OB doctor said that steroids don't cause problems.
During my first pregnancy, I wasn't on steroids until well into my second trimester and had a perfectly fine baby, but with my second pregnancy, I started steroids around week 6, and that baby had a cleft lip, cleft palate, and we lost that baby. With my thrid pregnancy, I was on steroids when I got pregnant and lost that baby around 5 weeks. I had different GI doctors and OB doctors with my first pregnancy than with subsequent ones, but all 4 of them said it was safe. So I thought it was safe, I looked it up and it was a category C, so I figured if it was safer for the baby for me to be on steroids then to let the flare get worse than I was ok with it.
But now I am wondering if this is responsible for my miscarriages. Which really upsets me because that would mean they were completely avoidable! But there is no way to know if that was the cause. But I'm not sure if I should call and talk to both my GI doc and my midwife or just make sure that I never take steroids during a prgnancy again. And I know that I'm not the first patient to be on steriods while pregnant, so why would it affect two of my pregnancies? I'm off them now, so I'm hopeful that we'll have a succesful pregnancy once we get pregnant as long as I stay off steroids. But I'm just amazed that no one thought anything of it! Especially since the first miscarriage had a cleft lip and cleft palate?!
