The American Academy of Pediatrics will issue a new policy statement in the March issue of Pediatrics about "Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk."
The AAP continues to recommend "exclusive breastfeeding for about 6 months, followed by continued breastfeeding as complementary foods are introduced, with continuation of breastfeeding for 1 year or longer as mutually desired by mother and infant."
The new policy statement also:
- offers more detailed information about the benefits of breastfeeding as compared to policy statements in 2005 and 1997
- reinforces the AAP's support for the WHO/UNICEF Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding program
- encourages use of WHO growth curves for children under age two years, as they represent the optimal growth of the breastfed infant
