I just got off the phone with my best friend. She's one of those that you can't remember when you didn't know each other. Anyway, she's about 21 weeks pregnant. Yesterday was the big ultrasound and the results of some blood test (one of those state required tests). The dr told her it looked like the baby had a severe defect. She saw a specialist today who ran more tests. Her baby's abdomen is open and her organs are forming outside her body. She'll need surgery immediately after birth and will spend weeks recovering in the hospital. The drs expect her to make a full recovery and lead a normal life with no lasting effects. I read online that 80% of these babies have little to no damage to the intestines and heal completely with no complications. The severity of the damage to the intestines affects the difficulty of the recovery, of course. My heart just breaks for my friend. The prognosis is optimistic, but its devastating at the same time. We live so far apart and all I want to do is gather her in my arms. I just love her and want her to be safe and happy and to be able to enjoy her pregnancy. I just thank God its operable and they expect a good outcome and pray God takes care of that little baby and gives her mama the strength she needs.
