Sean completed his first week at Scout Camp this summer immediatly following our return from 9 days of family vacation! We only had about 24 hours to wash and pack before shipping him off!
He and 5 other boys (4 from our webelos den that moved up to scouts with him) were also at camp this year. The 6 boys took space exploration merit badge right after breakfast where they made model rockets. Right after that, they took leather work merit badge (same pavilion, so not much walking!) and they made knife cases. After lunch, they went to the eco-con area and worked on their Mammal Study merit badge and later in the week another one about nature, but I don't know which one and I don't think they quite finished. One day, they took the 6 mile hike the whole way around the lake with Braddock's Brigade- which is what many of the 1st year scouts spend much time in learning the skills that are needed for earning rank. Our boys didn't spend much time there because the leaders and older scouts felt they could do a better job with that stuff and let the boys earn merit badges instead at camp. The last 2 days of camp were much hotter and it turns out that those were the 2 days they were doing swimming skills.
I went and spent 2 nights at camp with the troop and helped to chaperone our younger group at their classes and help remind them that they needed to keep their pieces and parts for leather work or rocket stuff and give them ideas on how to not misplace it. I even enjoyed spending some time in the evenings with the older boys. I wish I could have spent a longer time there... but I'm glad I wasn't there the last night... they had a wicked storm come through and spent much of the evening and early night at the dining hall. When they got to go back to camp, most of the stuff was dry enough, however, Sean woke up to a puddle on his chest... luckily it was the last night!
