Hi,
So I don't smoke, nor does anyone I live with. However at work, sometimes I literally can't escape it. I work in the office of a hotel, and the office is located behind the front desk. There are no doors to the office, its just a bunch on interconnecting rooms. Well the lobby keeps the front doors open throughout the day since there is no air conditioning. Its pretty much necessary or front desk staff will suffocate to death. That being said smoke comes in from people outside and floats through the lobby and back into the office. Its disgusting but there isn't anything that can really be done. The ppl smoking outside are far enough from the enterances so we can't ask them to move.Plus like I said we can't close the doors to the lobby, it just gets too hot and the air flow is needed. I can't move and work elsewhere, my desk in in that office, plus the only other offince is accounting, which I don't do so I cannot work there. Plus there is no space for another body anyways. I don't know what to do. Its not every day but some days its really bad. Is just the smell as bad as actually inhaling the direct smoke? Like I said it floats through the lobby and the building so its not like I am standing even within 50 ft of the smoker. Whoever it is is hundereds of feet away. Should I be concerned? Sometimes I need to cover front desk if they are busy or go on lunch, that really bothers me because sometimes the smoke smell is really strong and I am uncomfortable working out there. I know I should probably mention that I do not feel comfortable being pregnant and covering front desk due to the smoke filled lobby we occassinally get, but they would need to make major accommodations to fulfill my request, as we are a small private company with small staff. They way the schedules are done between my department and front desk, I am sometimes the only one that can cover. My boss had to miss a meeting the other day to cover for me since my back was so sore I couldn't even bend over or stand for very long. I feel guilty.
