For my daughter's 13th birthday this past week, she had invited her Girl Scout troop over for movie watching and a sleepover and she had asked that instead of presents, could they please bring a monetary donation for the community library. We had 8 girls attend and many did get her gifts ranging from 13 cookies from the local bakery to specialty bookmarks for whatever book she is reading to a really cute pen and journal. But they all brought donations as well... one family misread the invite and purchased 4 new books for Emma to donate. The rest brough money (although one family requested that she split the money between buying herself a new book and giving the other half to the library).
So the next day, Emma wrote a notecard to the library and put the $80 inside and we drove to the library. She presented the card to the head librarian who was pretty much in shock that this was happening. Emma had requested that they use the money to purchase more teen books in e-book format since their selection was fairly small since they've only offered this service for the past year. She also suggested some of her favorite authors.
Well, yesterday, she got a thank you note in the mail from the library and they are purchasing 3 new e-books by Veronica Roth and 3 new e-books by Tamora Pierce in honor of Emma's 13th birthday. It will be included in their next large purchase for the library system which should be very soon. Needless to say, my daughter is very excited to be able to "borrow" these very soon and that all of her friends will be able to do the same!
